I haven't seen too many descriptions on how much drones/droids/bots are integrated into the Tau society, does anyone have any information on where that can be obtained(besides the Tua codex)?
If drones can run tasks, projects, even coordinate other drones, would it be incongruous to devise a drone army list for the Tau? Is not the Tau empire expanding very rapidly, taking over native populations on new systems all the time? Might not drone exploratory and periphery brigades not be of great use to them?
To set a scene, imagine the edges of Tau controlled frontiers, and colonies, drone ships patrol, explore, and conquer new territories before the main infantry units deploy to set up the peace and governing agreements with newly conquered societies. Main Tau officials remain on those systems, and have drone protection forces in place nearby if needed. This would be much like histrorical empires such as Rome and England when they're empires expanded much over their personnel resources to administer and hold them by their own troops. They used local troops for control, here drones can be a huge part of that.
New drone units can include ones listed in this post:

Drone command and control HQ's
drone missile launcher platforms
drone surface artillery units
mini drone swarms
mini drone mines
Any ideas on this? It would be cool to see if a drone army can be made to be more then just cool looking, but useful yet unique tactically and strategically compared to standard Tau and Kroot lists.
Its already been done by George Lucas....
HALO 2 - Sure those first few games where you wipe out the opposition with the rocket launcher, overshield and camoflage are fun but after a while you start looking for something more. Next it has to be death by plasma sword or sticky bomb, till pretty soon only clobbering your opponent with the butt of your rifle will do. The more difficult something is to do, the more fun it is when you pull it off. For IG players the word for this is Mobility
Im not so sure that its possible. Everything I've read so far about the drones is that they have only a very rough artificial intelligence, nothing near the kind of adaptive decision making type of process that would be necessary to have a completely independent drone army. Without that kind of AI, drones could be loaded with an ideal battleplan based on intelligence, but if they came up against something unexpected, they probably wouldnt be able to adapt to it.
I just can't dig a drone army. Tau use drones for the menial tasks they can't be bothered with, ro to assist them in the menial tasks they don't like doing. Drones clean thier homes and act as cheap security/extre firepower. Drones have a limited "intelegence", they can only be programmed to identify specific targets and attack them, or patrol a specific area and attack anything that matches the "enemy" definition. They can't make tatcical decisions, the the closets thing you'd ever have to a "command drone" would be a drone that's being remotely controlled by a Tau somewhere, and even them I'm not sure if drones can be equipped with the equipment needed to communicate commands to other drones.Besides, the Fire Caste would not be very happy about a mindless drone being used to do thier jobs. It would be an insult to thier honour.
Those are all good points, hmm. The idea was not for a large percentage of the Tau army, just for frontier exploration and colonization armies. As the Tau expand, they may run into problems with resource availibility concerning having enough personnel (fire warrioirs etc.) to explore, provide protection to colonies, and assit skirmish forces on the frontier worlds.
Can it not work if for instance, the army is controlled from orbital HQ's(manned by Tau), as well as some manned Tau drone control stations, including mobile skimmers on the battlefield? What if there's an orbital ship, like a manta, which is relaying recon data to ground stations like one or two devilfishes that are additionally command and control comm vehicles? These in turn can coordinate all drone activity with drone squad leaders, like the drone queen unit in that tau new wargear post...
The idea would work well for a small army, it's highly probable that they'd use a lot of drones to patrol hostile borders or explore parts of a planet that are hard to get to. I really like the idea of having a small recon/scouting force of drones, I even like the idea of having drones programed for specific tasks (maybe like a guard drone,or a spy drone, or a drone mine). I'm just afriad your going to have some git come up with a 2000 pt drone army with heavy attack drones and super invisible ninja drones and stuff. There's no way you can convince me 2000 pts of drones with bloody Broadside weapons strapped to them or whatever is a scout/security force.
The problem with the troops choice is that the drones have jet packs so they can deepstrike, move and move back and the ignore terrain move. Also an intelligent done of the same size probably couldn't have anywhere near the amount of fire power the drones have. This might lead to something like a tyranid army with synapse as an inteligent drone would rellay comands to the gun and sheild drones.
Overall though I hate the idea! The tau just use the drones as fast units that can stop the enemy in their tracks while absorbing fire so the suits and warriors can pick them off.
