Welcome to Librarium Online!
Me and my friends play 3 player free for all games and I always seem to lose. I play against tau and space marines. Both usually try to play defensive and stay away from each other waiting for the other to make a move or move slightly closer untill they can blast at me from long range. We play with plenty of terrain but I can't seem to win, (500 pt games).
Here's about how the battle goes:
I use my hormies, and leaping warriors to race in fast while drawing fire away with my carni, spinegaunts, and taking out the more dangerous things with my zoanathorpe. I easily whipe one player out, buy by the time I don this the other is in position to fire at me and I have lost most of my gaunts from getting shot. I just got the carni for my Bday and so it absorbs almost all of the fire after my friends saw it whipe out half a space marine army in cc.
Im no expert on nids, but I think I know what to do. You say that you use warriors, zoanthropes and a fex in a 500 pts game? That is some very expensive units, you need mass to win. Try fielding a shooty warrior HQ, and 2-3 big broods of horma- or schytegaunts. Believe me, quantity beats quality most of the time..
Yeah I was asking more about strategy. I know the simple ways to win with swarms of gaunts but I don't have the money to purchase them. Besides, I want to wait until the new rules and models come out before making any big purchases.
Heres my list:
3 cc warriors-126
carnifex, haven't decided what. Going to put magnetic mounts but mostly use cc-135
Depending on the level of terrain, I'd suggest hugging the cover around one board edge with your spine gaunts, adrenagaunts and zoanathorpe. Don't go into the open untill you are ready to assault. With the warriors and carni, head down the other side, also huggging cover. They will take longer to reach the enemy, but by the time they do, your faster moving units should have reached and assaulted the other enemy, and should be consolidating towards the surviving player. Target wise, send the gaunts towards the tau, as it doesn't take much to beat them in an assault, and the warriors, carni against the sm's. Hope that helps,
Man, trying to beat anybody 1v1 with 500pt tyranid army is hard, let alone against 2 shooty armies.
In my experience i've found to keep away from games under 1000pts with Tyranids. Because of the need for synapse it means u have to have aload of big HQ charaters like Warriors which
1. Will just get targeted straight away and then everything goes instinctive Or,
2. You keep them hidden and they are a waste of points.
If u go for tyant there goes half u points straight away and is even more going to be targeted.
I'd say either buy more stuff or stick 1 on 1's. If u've all only got new starting army's of ~500pts, try doing a small campaign with a series of 1v1's doing different scenario. It'll be more of a day and it'll be more interesting (imo)
"They are coming! I feel them scratching inside my mind, scratching, screaming, running, so many - so, so many voices. They're coming for us - flesh, body and soul!"
I'll also make my usual suggestion of adhering to the Patrol rules for games this small... Except for making the points limit 500, of course. =)
This should restrict most of the tougher units and vehicles, though it can still be a tough fight. Never liked free-for-all matches, all too often two players gang up against the third.
Of course, if You have terrain, hide and wait... They'll have to start shooting at each other, after which You can hopefully attack their weakened units.
"The meat things seek to destroy ourselves. They hunt us as we hunt them but they are weak and uncertain. The inferior flesh will be entirely destroyed, all biomatter consumed. Ourselves will fight to the last, all weak flesh must be devoured."
What kind of victory conditions do you play? I suggest that you use victory points. Simply being the last army standing allows for some rather lame tactics. Basing victory on bodycount makes things much more interesting.
Nothing wrong with the list. If he takes too many little guys the Bolters and Tau Guns will mop them up. You should just do what they do and sit in their deployment zones. If all of you do that they will realize they are being lame and maybe attack . 3 for alls are always unbalanced. Especially for any offensive armies like ours. What my buddies and i usually do is play a 2 on 1 but with even points. It always seems more fair.
Here are some Tyranid items I have going on Ebay!
Maybe you could find a way to make the games fairer for you. Perhaps a mission where they are more inclined to shoot each other, then you sweep in for the kill.
or you play a scenario were you hve to move!! capture objectives and such. and 3 FFA games are rather one sided... try a 1 vs 1 battle
