Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey guys, Im a new Tau player i just started collecting and a couple of friends that I play with are going all out to try and work out a way to obliterate me. Just had a few questions, If anyone has any ideas about how to make these strats less-impactful or how i can just get around them.
My one friend plays SM and he is going to take terminators (which frankly im terrified of) and he plans on doing that precision Deepstrike thing to get within a few inches of my stuff, and Im worried that he will assault me on 1st turn and we all know how that chapter ends...
Another thing is both him and my other friend who plays CSM are going to be taking lots of devs with plasma cannons (again scared ****-less of them) so i figure i just hammer them with my broadsides and Ion cannon.
Last thing is that the CSM player is taking a Daemon prince that Ive had bad experiences with in past battles, same with the devs i guess i should just be unloading Railguns into him.
If anyone has any ideas on how to counter these strategies id like to hear them, im going to be posting my army list shortly.
Power corrupts... Absolute Power is kinda neat though...
like you said use lots of rail guns on the chaos guys and for the termies keep a crisis suit or 3 behind your lines to keep you safe
INNOCENCE IS NOT IMMUNITY
oh, always fun to impart knowledge....
well, first things first, deepstrike has to happen 2nd turn at the earliest.
terminators are scary, but then, so are plasma rifles. Use battle suits armed with them and fusion blasters to whittle away at the terminators, then run away and hide.
there's tons of ways to get around them, so experiment and see what works for you.
CSM can't have plasma cannons. and they aren't that deadly to Tau. Plasma cannons are designed to kill heavy infantry and light opentopped tanks. the only heavy infantry that Tau have are battle suits, and you can use their jetpacks to hide them from such firepower. It's not that bad if it hits anything else. the trick to dealing with them is to hide from them while destroying a different section of your opponent's army, using a tactic called local fire superiority. search the site, im sure they'll be able to explain it if you've never heard the term before.
Daemon princes. a few ways to deal with them. Shoot them with heavy weapons from afar is good. Distracting it from actually hurting anything vital by feeding it a cheap unit like kroot can work too.
welll, hope that helps some. post if you got anymore questions.
Termies deepstrike 2nd turn, if they're lucky. the then sit there for 1 turn, open to fire. The earliest they could assault would be 3rd turn. Game's half over.
yeah and there should not be that many terminators left.
the devestators should not be a problem if you are going to use a ion cannon.. just markerlight that unit and theie coversave is no good then blas 3 shoots and they ar down.
how mny points are you playing?? and what models do you own??
Ahem... i think CSM can have plasma cannons, just not Nurgle. Yet you are correct on your analysis of tactics, what i find works best is Stealth suits, i use Stealth suits for everything except Tank Hunting and they do it all perfectly(or mbe im just incredibly lucky with my dice rolls ^_^ ). Aneway, as someone said, Terminators cant assault the turn they deepstrike, stay out of Stormbolter range(incredibly ez for tau) and annihlate them from afar. If hes smart hell DS them behind cover, if so, use your crisis to flush them out and run circles around them. About the Devestators, this is one thing Stealth actually are usually good for, infiltrate behind some cover a bit close, then jump out and say BOO

Just some advice on the Devastators: As a testing thing, I teamed up a full Crisis suit team with two Commanders (one Shas'o and one Shas'el) and got them in rapid fire range of the Plasma Rifles, using the jump-shoot-jump technique against a SM army. I won't go into specifics, but they killed a Devastator squad, 2 Tactical squads, a squad of Scouts, and a few people from a Command squad. Just try that by keeping them in cover as they jump toward a good area. In case you are wondering, the Commanders both had Plasma Rifles, Missile Pods, Shield Generators, and HW Multi Trackers. One Crisis suit had a Plasma Rifle, Missile Pod, and a Multi Tracker. Another had a Plasma Rifle, Missile Pod, Fusion Blaster, and HW Multi Tracker. The last one had a Plasma Rifle, Fusion Blaster, and Multi Tracker.

Chaos can only have a plasmacannon on their dreadnoughts so you don't have to worry about those, as for the DP, just use a railgun, it only need to fail that invulnerable once and it's dead.
Get as many railrifles as you possibly can. At St6 AP3 R36 it will be your enemies that will run from you. Also, get a full squad of Stealth Suits, 18 St5 AP5 hits per turn you are gonna do at least something. As well as that you can lurk just out of firing range then move in and let rip with the Burst cannons before moving out of range in the assault phase with the jet packs.
