Welcome to Librarium Online!
I have begun to collect Necrons, and I am in dire need of your help. I am planning on building 400pts, which will then grow into 1000pts. However, I am at a loss on what to take. I have some idea of their advantages and disadvantages through my limited gaming experience with them, reading tacticas, and reading batreps. However, I am curious to know how effective immortals are. They seem to me quite cheap for the amazing value many people get out of them. I can see their disadvantages (cost), but the ability to carry an assualt GAUSS weapon AND be T 5 is very temting.
I can also see the advantages of flayed ones, although i do not like the models, the rules or the background fluff!.
So I pose this question to you, are immortals worth it for 400pts? I plan on using them in conjunction with a largish unit of necron warriors, and taking about 7 immortals. Please help me! I will most likely be playing this army against MEQ's and Khorne.
the problem is that unless it's a Combat Patrol game, then you need at least 2 squads of 10 Warriors and a Lord, which is already 460pts
If on the other hand you are playing Combat Patrol rules, then you're looking at 180 pts worth of warriors to start with. Of course you can't take a Lord or any Scarab Swarms ot Tomb Spyders either, so you could use the remaining 220 pts for 7 (ish) Immortals
first things first, Immortals are the best unit in the necron army. Just 5 of them can shoot 10 S5 AP4 shot a turn at range 24", get 10 of them, thats 20 shots!
I personally use immortals as a bodyguard for my lord, who has a ressurection orb, to keep them going for at least 4 turns.
As for using them in a combat patrol, I wouldn't bother really, go for flayed ones instead. Save the immortals for larger games.
- i hate immortals, they are kinda like the guns of a destroyer, but on tougher necron warriors, however they are not nearly as good as either of those units.
-their AP4 shots cannot pay back their point cost against powered armored enemies, which is 60% of them. thus only take them against orks, nids, IG, and some tau.
-they are inefective advancing with your warriors, and warriors are better as a tough advancing while firing unit anyway.
-to fix this most people put them with a lord with veil of darkness and res orb, and have them teleport, however this is incredibly risky, and on a board with standard terrain, it is ridiculously easy to lose a 480pt squad in the first movement phase, when they land in that forest.
- they are however, the only effectiive unit with the veil of darkness, so the ONLY WAY to use them is with a lord, against an army that will justify their risk, by getting close, and one who doesn't have power armor. this would be IG and tau, however IG armies are so huge, there is almost nowhere you can teleport that their masses aren't. thus immortals are only worth it against tau.
-on a final note, they are a ridiculous 10$ a piece, so you have to invest 80-100$ just to get a decent squad. for that price, i could get a battleforce and HQ and start another army, instead of get my squad of immortals.
OK, you dont die when you Ds into area terrain, just impassable terrain. And immortals are very much worth it. Sure their guns are similar to destroers, but destroers are speedy, and die quicly. 10 t5 models will die slowly, and then get back up most of the time. and if you do treat them as a warrior unit, then they work great, because they do get to shoot 24" while moving.
And did you forget about one of the most important enemy armies? ELDAR! immortals rip through eldar like nobodys business. Very few eldar can save against that gun, its still wounding on a 2, and very few cc eldar can wound them in cc. And why not just use them in a regular advance agsinst armies that don't give you ds space. You don't have to VoD them to make them good.
I do admit that if you are playing alot of 3+ save armies, they might not be worth it. So it all comes down to who you playing most. If its even 50-50 3+ saves to worse saves, I would take them.
They're a great bodyguard for your Necron Lord and probably the most versatile Elites choice we have.
Destroyers are nice but I'm not sure I'd spend twice as many points for extended threat range.
Truth is, more people like them than dislike them.
And over there we have the labyrinth guards.
One always lies, one always tells the truth, and one stabs people who ask tricky questions.
Yeah they are expensive, but i guess it's up to the person if they want to spent that amount of money for them... and just to let you guys know, I did spend that much to get then and in the many battles i have fought i think that they were worth it. Not saying that they never did nothing too, but they always seemed to stay and do something most of the time... also if you think about it, 5 destroyers just about cost the same as if buying 10 immortals.

every battle of 1500 or more i use 10 immortals ans every game they pay for themselves.
if they are used properly they can wreck massive damage with their ranged assult weapons.
some people don't like them and some people do.
they are quite awsome
-actually destroyers are a lot cheaper because small units are actually effective, and they come in the box set
-my friend plays biel-tan, his whole army is either a tank, in a tank, or a wraithlord/avatar. also the tank units are cc aspect warriors, and jump from tank to cc, so i can't shoot them, and they're mostly scorpions anyway.
-i normally face chaos, dark angels, guard, dark eldar, sisters, and nids, with ocasional tau, orks and blood angels.
