I played necrons a long time ago and mainly field the older models. I'd like to try to use scarabs ( Thanxtiaxrulesall). I have 3 bases of the new ones. Does anyone have a cool way to make the old ones useable? I was thinking of just making some terrain on the larger bases and putting them on it. Any comments would be loved.
Also I am curious as to how people feel about the Heavy Destroyers. It seems that odds would have a Destroyer destroying a lemon russ before a heavy destroyer would (3X2/3X1/6=33% compared to 1X2/3X1/3=22%). But the ap seems as though it would be nice.
I don't think anything is wrong whith the old Scarabs, i kinda like 'em
I never really did like HD's, their 65 and only T5 and 1W... Hell, a Wraith Lord is like 5 points more and its T8 and has 3Ws. On the other hand, their one of the only things that Necron have to deal whith Termies

anyway. check eBay for anyone selling scarabs, it sometimes happens.
HD's are good: especially for things like character hunting. in 40k there is pretty much nothing with better than 2+ armour save, although invulnerables are annoying. the str also means that they can wound very easily. BTW, as they are jetbikes they get the +1 toughness bonus, although not for calculating insta-kill.
also as jetbikes they can zip in and out of range of enemies and still fire, and having a range of 36 in makes it even better. i find them especially useful for taking out things like ork killer kans where they basically have no choice but to destroy them.
Actually Tunisia, they arent jetbikes, they just MOVE like jetbikes. So they do in fact have an unmodified toughness of 5 that is taken into account for insta-kill (I.E. only a str 10 weapon can do it to them). They are essentially Immortals on a fast moving platform.Originally Posted by Tunisia
Anyways, Heavy Destroyers are very nice for a couple of reasons. Mainly they are nice because necrons have a hard time killing stuff that has high toughness and good armor such as wraithlords, TMC's, Termies and so on. They are better than Destroyers at taking out the aforementioned models. I almost never use them for killing vehicles since like you said, destroyers are better at that.
However they arent good for taking out Idependent characters unlike what tunisia said. This is because any player worth his or her mettle knows that IC's are invisible to enemy fire as long as they are behind another allied squad. You wont find many people that stick their HQ out in front of their army. So dont count on using your Heavy Destroyers as HQ snipers.

"I am the architect of fate!"
i got 11 scarab bases off ebay for a good price recently, and he even threw in some free warriors, lol.
I see as many old scarabs as new ones on ebay, and you COULD get away with one per base, as they are so large, just beef em up with a fancy base/terrain.
[QUOTE=Demandred]Actually Tunisia, they arent jetbikes, they just MOVE like jetbikes. QUOTE]
Destroyers, heavy destroyers, and destroyer lords all have the rule: jetbike.
models with the rule: jetbike get +1 toughness, turboboosters, 12 in movement etc.
this is proved by the necron lord destroyer body codex entry: He moves as if mounted on a jetbike and gets +1 toughness . it also says that he is mounted on a destroyer platform, implying that it is the same as the destroyers', not just similar, and so destroyers and heavy destroyers also get +1 toughness.
BTW, when was the necron codex printed? 3rd ed? 4th ed?
But the toughness isn't 4(5) like regular jetbikes, it is just 5. With an addition to the lord makes him toughness 6 base and cannot be insta-killed. The codex came out along with the tau codex i belive. So late 3rd I think... maybe
i personaly like the look of the old scarabs better
Oooh it's got chicken legs!
I have interpreted the section for the toughness of destroyers and heavy destroyers to be an unmodified 5, as the codex entry for these say they MOVE as jetbikes, so they do not get +1 toughness (it is encorporated into their toughness of 5 already).
It is, in my opinion, only the lord that gets this added bonus, as it specifically mentions this.
any more views?
A few friends of mine and I like to play oddball games like Chaos teaming up with IG, IG taking Orks as Elites choices, etc. In a few games, I ran a Chaos Lord with a Thunderhammer he'd ripped from the cold dead hands of a Space Marines Chapter Master. If you want to use old scarabs, find some folks sho are willing to let you use them with the new rules. Unfortunately, I don't think people will let you use the old rules, but you never know.
