here's the thing ork stormboys cost 15 pts each and LatD floating mutants cost 12 each. :huh: for the points cost the mutants are a better buy. especially in a horde army. ( check the stats) do you agree or disagree?
There's a distinctive problem with comparing the two armies like you are, but let me see if I can weigh in here...
19 Stormboyz armed iwth a slugga and a choppa, along with a nob armed with a choppa, PK, and Iron Gob will run you 342 points, which is ALOT in an ork list.
19 Mutants with the blessing of tzennie, backed up by a boss with a bolt pistol and powerfist, will run you 265 points, which is almost eighty points less then what you would run into with the orks. However, these are the naked troops. If you give them all autopistols and give two of them a flamer, you now face 294 points. But there are several notible differences beyond simple point cost.
For one thing, the ork's toughness is naturally higher. Sure, the mutants have demonic whatever, but they still just have base toughness 3. This is weedy, and should be mocked at any and all possibile times. ^_-
To go with that toughness, the orks have an additional attack (plus the bonus attack for having two close combat weapons) and have a higher weaponskill. Of course, the mutants DO have a better save then the stormboyz, but still, as an ork player, 6+ is oftentimes enough for me. It is important to point out that mutants are a TROOP choice, while stormboyz are an ELITE choice. Stormboyz are meant to be a spearhead to your marching horde, or to assault your enemy quickly, and they are built to do this. They'r ethe closest thing orks can have to a surgical striking unit, and have to be used accordingly. This means you have to be, at times, sneaky.
Mutants make a wonderful stumbling block unit, I will admit, but the group of 20 stormboyz, if they get the WAAAGH off (which they more then likely will, if they are 20 strong) will simply chew through the mutants in an asault phase. 80 attacks are nothing to sneaze at, you have to admit.
As for the general complaint about stormboyz... I do have to agree that they DO need some work. One possibility is to give them the special rules that warbikes enjoy (especially the pollution save and the fearless. morale is a problem in such a small mob). This makes sense to me, personally, and is currently being play-tested by other ork players. They seem to like it.
Still, stormboyz are like stikkbommaz. THe vast majority will claim that they are useless (stikkbommaz are not, however, useless, they just are not as effective against heavy infantry. Use them against light infantry and units in cover and you'll see how beautiful they truly are), but there will be a significant minority that will be able to turn these things into skumgrod killing machines.
