How much is the maximum toughness? i think it would make sense if it was 10, but my friend says that it is 8.
however, if it is 8 then there is no point in the first 'Gauss' clause (stating that on a 6 to wound with a gauss weapon a wound is automatically scored, but they are still allowed armour saves). Str4 wounds T8 on a 6 anyway, and Str4 is the weakest gauss weapon we have. This further confirms my idea that gauss weapons are the slightest bit useless. they aren't really much of a feature if all they do is allow warriors to take out big fat tanks one shot in every one hundred and eight. Seems so me to be a bit useless...
please correct me if i am wrong: about the toughness or how useful gauss is...
Strength 4 CANNOT hurt toughness 8. It can only go as high as seven. Of course, what does have toughness 8 anyways, besides a wraithlord?Originally Posted by Tunisia
And I would argue that getting a glancing hit on a 6, no matter what the armour, is pretty awesome. I get nonstop complaining from my opponents that my basic gun can knock out a Land Raider.
yes you are correct about the toughness but dont underestimate their effectiveness on tanks
so what if you dont destroy the vehical you can still destroy weapons or even stop it from moving and shooting. The toughness rule is pretty pointless but they had to put it in the rule to show that it has the same effectiveness agianst flesh as it does other matter.

sorry, i think i mustr have misread something somewhere, i thought you could wound anything up to and including double your strength.Originally Posted by untitledmike
ok, so our basic troops can wound everything on a 6. but yes, what does have toughness 8 that doesnt have some other special rule protecting it, or a stupid save or invulnerable?
also, i was mistaken about the odds of killing a tank. it is one in 54, twice as much as i though it was. but still, for a turn of shooting from basically your entire army, you may as well have invested in some heavy destroyers...
dude once i had about 20 warriors and my friend had 2 wrath lords
if it wasnt because if the gauss special, it would have been a pointless to go on
Against high-toughness creatures, the wraithlord is really the only thing it's useful against. What gauss is golden for is blowing up vehicles.
Necron heavy destroyers, yes get a str9 gun, but they cost a LOT of points, and don't have a 9 wound buffer like an lascannon in a marine army.
If we didn't have the gauss rule, heavy tank armies would eat us instead of it being the other way around.
Asside from that, yeah you statistically need 54 shots to kill a vehicle, but dice naturally skew statistics (there is a scientific explination for it...just can't remember what it is...) IOWs, never underestimate a good handful of dice's ability to turn up 6s
It's wierd though...I do find that immortals tend to be horrible vehicle hunters. Not because of their weapons, but becasue of their numbers. I just never seem to get any 6s when I aim them at vehicles...
In my army, my main vehicle killers are my big blocks of necron warriors. The heavy destroyers come in a distant second (mainly because they can't ever hit anything...3 shots, 1 hit. CONSISTANTLY! It's wierd!)
edit: Gah! The typoes!!! they're everywhere!
Wake. Rise. Destroy. Conquer.
We have done so once. We will do so again.
dice skew statistics because of chaos theory- you just have to work out everything which is going on everywhere in the universe at any one point and throw the dice at exactly the right angle and speed and direction, and it will be a six.
but anyway, yes i see what you mean, but also stats are skewed against good things happening. it's called sod's law, and there is actually a mathmatical formula for it.
anyway yes, has anyone had any real success in tank hunting by gauss? i generally just use destroyers- my two heavies get shot to peices turn one. paranoid imperium...
I have found that as far as vehicle hunting goes, a squad of 20 warriors is the way to go. I have yet to rapidfire at a vehicle and not at least disable it. 40 dice is nothing to sneeze at.

1) Chaplain led Assault squad - 2 plasma pistols, powerfisted sergeant
2) 8 man Devastator squad - 4 missile launchers
3) Land Speeder Tornado - HB + AC
Generally, my units of 10 warriors glance every vehicle they shoot at. My current record of 1 shot 1 kills are-
Eldar Wave Serpent -(this was literally 1 shot 1 kill, I only had one Warrior in range)
Iron Hand Demolisher
Salamander Land Raider
2 Leman Russes (2 seperate games)
1 Ork Killa Kan
All 6 kills were made by the same unit of Warriors, so I popped off one of their heads and replaced it with a Destroyer Head (left over from my Destroyer Lord).
