Welcome to Librarium Online!
OK I am by no streatch of the imagination an expert on nids, having not even bough any since the days of space hulk, however:
Another board and a gaming club are getting together and have got a table at games day, the gist is 2000 points of wolves and Death watch Vs 2000 points of nida, the imperials have captured a hive tyrant and the nids want him back (I am paraphrasing several pages of Fluff)
I have been tasked with producing a captured hive Tyrant, so aquired the mini, going for the upper arms with the 2 long claws, rather than the whip and bone sword, and the stubbier gun.
So I am looking for inspirational colour schemes, I really dont like the white on the current GW stuff (Leviathan I think), and was considering purple skin and a black to scorpion green caarapace, but any suggestions/piccis would be very greatfully recieved
I'm a big fan of my gray-highlighting-black city camo colorscheme for my Tyranids (as seen here: http://www.librarium-online.com/gall...3&userid=8045), but that's probably not striking enough for what you intend.
So instead, I advise this scheme (using Citadel colors):
Start with a black basecoat, and apply Catachan Green (the dark brown/green) to all the armor plating on the Tyrant. Drybrush (fairly heavily). Camo Green (the lighter brown/green) over that. Then you're ready for your final layer: Burnished Gold. Very, very, very, extremely lightly drybrush the burnished gold over all green areas on the miniature. If you do this right, the model should change color from green to gold depending on which angle the light strikes it from.
For skin/flesh areas, I advise either a brown or a very dark red with this color scheme.
If done correctly, you wind up with a model that's both fairly easy to paint, but also very visually attractive.
Well with that painting you should do fine, your models are really well painted, the highlighting and shading is fantastic.
The burnished gold sounds very nice, gives it the kind of feeling of the carapace of one of those shiny beetles. Another idea could be to find a photo of a beetle or something and try to imitate the effect they get on their carapace - you know when a beetle moves into differing areas of light you get that "oil-sheen" effect? I'm sure that'll look great and be well within your abilities.
The only difference between tattooed people and non-tattooed people is that tattooed people are awesome and can kick your ass.

My color scheme, sorrey I don't have pics up yet, has a blood red body, black caraprace, and white stains on the caraprace that looks something like flames. The contrast and scheme looks pretty cool.
I think that with your painting level though whatever the heck you do is going to look great. Is your avatar that pic?

I base everything in white, since I use light colors for the flesh.
For the flesh, I base in Scorpion green. Next comes a thin wash of Dark Angels Green. Once that coat is dry, I dry brush layers of Scorpion Green and Sunburst Yellow, with each succesive layer having more yellow and less green in it. For the carapace, I get a flat base coat of Regal Blue. Once I have it even, I start using mixes of Regal Blue and Ice Blue and layer on slashes of color over the carapace (giving it the illusion of textured bone or chitin). I do about 3 or 4 highlight layers for each part.
I usually don't pick out the "vents" on the arms or legs other than with the Green/Yellow mix. For any bone bits, like the Scything Talons or the hoofs/spikes/teeth I base them in Scorched brown and highlight it with Bleached bone and Skull White.

the black and suinburst yellow scheme is very good looking, but the shading takes alot of time to be done properly, you can see itnthe this month's WD or in the codex.
Wolf pack, the black and yellow strikes me as rather a cop out - it is a speed paint.
Gojir.. (oh lord I cant spell that)!, So green-yellow flesh and mid-light blue carapace? (personnaly bone is bone, so tallons/claws teeth [admittedly all of which are ivory not bone] will be as you describe, brown/yellow to bleached bone/white)
