hi im a noob and was wondering what is so good about tau what are there stregnths and weaknesses i was also wondering if there a real good choice to start out with? and are they going to come out with new unit types for them cuase they dont have much?
Welcome.(now that the formalities are out of the way)
Read the Codex. Read the Codex. And in case you missed it, READ THE CODEX. I'm not just being a ****(completly) but this is the best advice for any new player. You will pick up things better for yourself this way and you may discover new tactics on your own(gasp) and be able to help the community as a whole.
I suppose I should be superficially helpful so I don't get yelled at....Firepower. Massive, brutal firepower. And agility that drives your opponents crazy to boot.what is so good about tau what are there stregnthsClose combat. Any 40K player knows this and will exploit this, even IG. Low I, Low WS, and poor Ld means bad times when the enemy gets close.and weaknessesThe Tau Battleforce, the best buy in the 40K universe, in my opinion.i was also wondering if there a real good choice to start out with?True...true. A major gripe of Tau player. Check out Forge World for some additional units but don't expect anything from GW, models or codex, anytime soon.and are they going to come out with new unit types for them cuase they dont have much?
Realy you are going about getting an army the wrong way, in my opinion go into a gw then pick out the box of guys that you think is the coolest and ask the dude at the counter what army it is and have him get you the codex.
Welcome and a good first post im glad you reaserched before you spent $100 plus dollars.
As for tau they have the ability the be the most mobile army in the game and have the best transport.
Also the tau have the best gun in the game and quite arguably the best tank. The standard tau trooper has the best standard gun in the game.
Unfortunatly, the tau dont have the best stat line, (Chaos/Space Marines/Necrons), And the tau are rubbish when it comes to close combat. If that happens your only hope is to zip away in your transports.
I like to believe that space marines are a great starting army because their is so much stuff going on for them. But as you know there are way to many space marine players and i am glad to see you are intrested in the tau. Due to the tau's limited tactics and unit selections they are a great starting army and they have some pretty good deals.

Actually there is going to be a codex update coming out before Christmas(details still unknown).Originally Posted by The Celestial
And thus far everything said is true, but I would like to add that Gun Drone Squdrons are quite awsome for DSing and taking out rear armor.
And the Hammerhead is as awsome as they say, A skimmer tht can move 12" and still unload all its weapon is total pwnage in my book!
Also IMO The Kroot are worth mentioning, they are in IMO more than worth thier points if used correctly.
And Welcome to LO!
Tau_tech9, welcome! My recommendation is to get a lot of Fire Warriors, although their stat line stinks, the fact that they can unload with the most powerful & longest range basic rifle in game that can glance Rhino armor (the look on an Iron Warriors player when my *TROOPER* took out his Rhinos and killed a few guys in the process was absolutely priceless! =^.^= Also the Crisis Suit and the Stealth Suit are some of the best Elite choices in the game.
-- Now for the bad, while Crisis Suits & Kroot (don't know, I don't use them... hate the model) can sort of handle themselves in close combat, the rest of your army will go splat if your opponent gets anybody into close combat.
Peace through Superior Firepower! =^.^=
