Take a Tyrant and have him drag along three Zoanthropes, each with Psychic scream.

All units within 12" are at -4 morale. And they'll likely not be able to assault either.

I'm sure someone has thought of this already and/or tried it.

Thoughts?

Neither can the inevitable be halted or avoided.
Hive Fleet Infernus shall scorch all worlds in its path.

Tyranids arent afraid of mind war really with 10 ld accross the board. The problem with this army is, like you said, its damn expensive. You are spending 150 pts on your zoanthropes.

But it absolutely rules eldar. If they fail any psychic roll they get attacked by the warp. And it makes your tyrant almost unassaultable in close combat.

Problem is 'shoot the big one's' rule means that they can just target your hive tyrant with the big weapons, and wipe out 'the horror' model. then they mop up with some assault squad. - slow movement as well, so it would take a while to get within range. Still, It rocks against eldar!

Psychic scream has no effect on mind war.
Codex Tyranids, page 7:
"[...]suffer a -1 modifier to all leadership based tests", it does not lower the leadership value in general.

Doesn't the Eldar have to take a Psy test in order to use it though? If so, then it has 2 effects: Its more difficult to pull off and if he fails, he suffers an attack from the warp.

You're right, the psychic tests are affected - but with runes of witnessing even a test on a six isn't that hard to pass (and it's a horribly expensive tactic...i'd rather have a second tyrant for the points).

Their leadership value which is used in the attack itself isn't affected though.

I agree whole heartedly. As great as Psychic Scream COULD be against Eldar, those stupid Runes make it nearly useless as an attack against their HQ. Plus, if you're close enough for that to be effective, you probably have won the game already.

Still, its a nice thought making the Eldar -4 to his psychic tests.

While it does sound tempting against Eldar, I think a more general (and less expensive) tactic is in order. With that cost, well 15 points less actually without enhancements, I'd rather take a brood of Tyrant Guard to accompany the Tyrant instead. At least then, the "Shoot the Big Ones" rule doesn't affect your gameplan as badly as it would with Zoanthroapes surrounding the Tyrant.

It sounds tempting, I do admit. But Runes of Witnessing really hinders it, unless you happen to be playing a rather unlucky character. The only other psyker the Eldar army has is the Warlock, which doesn't need to psychic tests to use powers.

In short, it seems like a lot of points, specialised to take out just one Farseer if that, doesn't it.
