    tau society, flaws

ok i was reading that caste system, and the ranks for each caste, ive noticed tau dont really have any medical personal. no doctors or nurses, then i was thinking about the other things they dont have that we do, like journalism type people, or teachers..
does anyone know how these guys are part of the greater good, or do they just simply, not exist?

Doctors an nurses are more then likly Drones or at least Medical Droids
As for Journalists...i dont think there's any entertainment media..but there would be progress reports and other documents accessable from their networked computer systems...
Teachers...other then maybe a higher level member infoming a lower member how to do his job, or accsessing the net...i have no idea...

They probably exist. But that kind of stuff is way to detailed for GW to go into. Un less you like 100 whole pages of fluff.

Back order or read the first few White Dwarfs featuring Tau as an army and one of them has a short story of a reporter and her cameraman taking footage of the brave fire warriors triumphing in the name of the greater good over the imperial guard with courage and superior technology... and then the cameraguy getting pegged in the chest with a lasgun bolt.

the dark side of the tau

tau are kinda like communists. everyone is working for the "greater good," through excepting there designated lot in life. we all know how well communism worked. the caste system was also used in India. The work of Ghandi, however, helped to reduce this system to nothingness. this system meant that one couldnt marry outside of your caste (that would suck if you were in the ugly caste). it also meant that the lowest rung, the untouchables, could not recive medical treatment, education, or things like that. this rung was also made to do all the dirty work, like cleaning toilets. so ya, tau are communist who enjoy punishing the poor people of their society. think about that the next time you buy a box of fire warriors. :p

    Hmmm.

The Tau caste system is based on your job in society. Its impossible to dislike this because you've been evolved for your job over six thousand years. India's caste system is based on social class (wealth). I don't think its fair to say the hindu caste system is in any way wrong because it's a big part of their religion.

I'm pretty sure that the water caste would teach and the earth caste would act as doctors (aside from droids).

Tau society is kinda socialist, but maybe more oligarchy because of the Ethereal Caste

Well battle field medics would be in the fire caste, and there is a reporter conversion on the GW website.

The book Fire Warrior puts the medical professionals exactly where I would have put them - in the Earth caste. Researchers, engineers, skilled with their hands - repairing a body is similar to building something.

As to the question of communism: First of all, a hallmark of communism is lack of private property. We simply have no idea how the Tau deal with the property question. Socialism is understood many different ways depending on context, so I will also stay away from that word.

The most accurate description of the moral build of Tau society is utilitarianism. This is where the goal of the society is to pursue the greatest good for the greatest number of people. There are a great many books and documents on the subject if you wish to pursue it.

Even if they were communists, there would be nothing wrong with that. The only problem with communism is that it hasn't worked on Earth - some would go so far as to add the word YET. The question is human nature. Most people think it isn't in human nature to accept your designated place and share all property. The Tau on the other hand are fine with this, largely because of the ethereals. They have had their society for thousands of years and it works remarkably well. It is a most efficient system, everyone contributing as much as possible AND enjoying it.

first of all, no the hindu caste system is not based on wealth, or lack thereof. the untouchables have no money at all because of their posistion in society. the caste system in india was also dictated your job in society. as a said in my post before, one of the job of the lowest caste was to clean and rake latreans (sp?) the bathrooms. the priest caste, the highest, could be related to the ethereals, as they were spiritual leaders as well as governmental leaders. Seeing as how the government of india at the time of ghandi was british, there was no real governmental role assigned to the highest caste. im no saying that the system is self is evil or wrong because its hindu, what i am saying on the other hand is that the system did not let imporverished people to escape their "lot in life." this is wrong. do you think that it is morally right to let a baby die because of its caste? maybe its just me.

the hallmark of communism is yes lack of private property. however, any shred of private property is sacrifed and handed over to the government for use to better the country itself, this betterment of the country is the "greater good." when the tau conquer a planet, it is said to be conquered for the greater good. also yes communisim has not worked on earth. and will never work on earth because of human nature. However, not because human nature does not allow us to share everthing we have, but because of human nature, some one will readily except everything you give him, but will not readily share everything he has. you may be familliar with this flaw in most governments called corruption. Joseph Stalin used the work of his people, to better himself. i dont know if youve ever read the book animal farm by george orwell, but it shows the absurdity of communism and the fact that greed will always be a part of human nature, and therefore there will always be corruption in the government. it is fair to say that corruption does occur in all governments all over the world. the reason that the U.S. government has not failed do to corruption is because the system of checks and balances does not allow absolute power to be held by any one branch (also because we are the best country in the world, followed closly be the United Kingdom). however in communism, as strated by stalin, one can indeed grab complete power, thus corruption can ruin a communist country. the impact stalin had on the U.S.S.R. carried over the years until finally the colapse of the largest communist republic occured.

    my thoughts on the matter-

You're pretty much right, but you're not thinking broadly enough. You conflate communism with totalitarianism, which is not necessarily the case. Democratic communism is theoretically possible.

But this is not a board for political discussion, so I will not make any more posts on this matter.
