Welcome to Librarium Online!
Am I the only who would like to see a REAL tau sniper? Yes i know we have pathfinders with railrifles but A) they can't infiltrate
they need and 80 point transport
something like eldar rangers would be great but even just normal firewarriors with sniper rifles much like SM scouts would be an advantage. After all we are a shooty army.
Here's a special character I created a while ago. He gets snapped but i didn't want to make him too unfair. Any suggestions on modding him would be great.
Special character : a tau army may include Karvus as a special character. if you decide to take him he counts as one of the elites choices for the army
Equipment : Tau sniper rifle and photon grenades
Karvus WS BS S T W I A Ld Sv points
1 5 0 4 2 1 0 10 3+ 90
Independant character : karvus is an independant character and follows all independant character rules in the warhammer 40,000 rulebook
Jetpack : karvus follows the jetpack rules as described in the warhammer 40,000 rule book
Stealth : Karvus follows the stealth rules as described in the warhammer 40,000 rule book
Infiltrate : Karvus follows the infiltrate rules as described in the warhammer 40,000 rule book
Ranged fighter : If karvus is wounded in close combat he is instantly killed.
Tau sniper rifle
Range Strength AP heavy
36" N/A 3 2
Sniper rifle automatically hits on 2+ and wounds on 4+. It counts as a rending weapon and as an alternate fire it can shoot it's underslung markerlight
For starters, it is impossible to have a Strength of 0 and 0 attacks. I'm guessing you came to those conclusions by just taking a basic stat line of something, taking stats away from needless things and putting them somewhere else. You cant do that. Stats are suppose to be realistic, why else would characters with no possible way of taking guns have a BS? His Strength HAS to be 3, to match the rest of the Tau, or else a 2, to show he is really weak. And he HAS to have at least 1 attack. Even a guy who trains his whole life with a gun knows how to punch or kick. Plus anyway, no model can have 0 Attacks or 0 Strength, its just not legal. Now, they can have 0 BS, to show they cant even hold a gun (hounds for example) or 0 in their armour save, but thats about the only things that can be 0.
The rule where he automatically dies from one wound in close combat is ok, but it shouldnt always apply. C'mon, one little hit from a little Grot or something isnt going to cause him to fall over dead. Maybe that rule should only apply to things with a Str equal to or higher than his toughness. Things with a lower Str than his toughness (at this stage, 4) just wound him like they would anything else.
The other thing I have a problem with is his points value. 90 points? With his special rules he is nothing more than a Stealth Suit with a sniper rifle. You cant tell me a Sniper rifle is worth 60 points, especially on something that already has disadvantages such as dying in one hit in combat. Definitely lower that, maybe to about 50?

Now that I got my rant out of the way, if you fixed up the rules and got serious about making him, I would say go for a Stealth Suit (well, obviously). Get the one with his gun pointing out and up, or even just the Shas'vre one. Although the Shas'vre has a knife and you dont want this guy to know anything at all about close combat. But I think it would look cool. Chop off the Burst Cannon and try (probably with some Green Stuff) to model that arm to be holding the Sniper Rifle. Try to get rid of the Stealth's head and instead put one of the unhelmeted heads you get on the Fire Warriors sprues.
For the Sniper Rifle, I'm not really sure. Maybe get 2 Pulse Rifles, glue them together (side on side, not end on end), modify some sort of better scope for them and then, if you like, get some more and kind of extend their barrels?
Dunno if this is enough for you, or if you wanted something completely different, but I think it would look cool enough, if done right. And no, I obviously dont have any pics or anything to help, this just all came off the top of my head right now.
Jetpack?! I thought the whole idea of a sniper was that he silently and without anyone seeing him infiltrates to a good firing spot and then silently and without anyone seeing him changes his firing position. If he's hopping around with a jetpack strapped to his back someone is going to see him and zap his ass back to T'au.
His stats as paxxer mentioned should be at least that of a Fire Warrior. Maybe you could give him a 5+ inv. save or something to represent a Tau camoflauge suit or something.
Needs more work.

Origionally he was 70 pts but i wanted to see what would happen if he was 90. i agree with modifying his instant death rule. I had already made him out of a pathfinder with a rail rifle, which had it's head removed and replaced with a helmetless head, I also gave his sniper rifle a scope and give him a cape/cloak. and with zero stats you could consider that he could attack but is so weak and has such a poor aim that what he does wouldn't even hurt the smallest thing.
another thing he had was a move called:
escape : If karvus survives for two rounds of hand to hand combat he may escape completely. he is removed from the board and comes back in using reserves rules.
With stats like that, theres almost no chance of him surviving even one round of combat. But seriously why would he not even be as good as a basic tau firewarrior in close combat. As if he cant just use his rifle to bash something, you make him look very clumsy. Paxxer is rite, he should have the most basic statline at the least and for that amount of points. And whats the point of him having a his high BS skill when he is armed with a weapon that doesnt use his BS ability.
Ultramarines Second Company
and he has a high BS in case he ever needs it for some bizzare test
The revised one looks alright but I1 is a bit low, 2 at least

as Zveroboy said; leave out them jetpack. Infiltration and the stealth ability should cover him enough, and that 5+ inv. save someone mentiones earlier even helps him against bigger guns. No need for a jetpack, as it doesn't fit in hes battlefield role. And besides, he can't move and shoot anyway; it's a heavy weapon...
"I have died a thousand deaths, and I will die a million more..."
Ok lets give him infiltrate...um you see that carnifix over there i think he wont be able to get me.And lets seee if i can get instant killed by that 3point grot! ( when saying this say it in a slow dumb voice ).
Also i would like to say you can buy a sqaud of steal suits for that!
