Welcome to Librarium Online!
I was thinking of making a 2000 point list without using any gaunts. It would probably have around:
-a winged tyrant
-BL with 8 man retinue
-2 squads of 10 stealers
-2 squads of 9 warriors
-and the rest would be raveners with talons RCs and devourers
Would this work? I would think so, but it is against my fluff of using no ranged weaponry... I guess devourers are just beetles. hm...
It wont work against shooty armys, but aginst other assault armys it will be fine.
no there is absolutely no way it will work. tyranids have strength in numbers. unless youre facing orks or something, and even then you'd have trouble. its just not the way tyranids are meant to be played. i think you're searching too hard for a revolutionary way to play tyranids. there is none. there is only variance in selection. there is always the basic core of endless troops. they need to be used to tie up the front lines. cheaply. that way you can spend the rest of your points on good units. also, gaunts are cannon fodder. what would you rather have at the end of an ordinance blast, a tyrant and his guard, or 8 gaunts?
I would have to disaggree. I play a gaunt-less army and my streak, right now with that list is about 12 (granted most of that is against smurfs but then again they make up 90% of the players out there). A non gaunt army works. It is very deadly, IF you know what you're doing. It requires tactics and manuvering on the order of Eldar so unless you really know what you're doing, you'll lose every time.Originally Posted by ArmageddonWarrior
Stealers are godly as is the rest of your army. The speed isn't any slower than the gaunt armies.
Very fragile, you can lose enough in 1 turn to cripple you.
I play a even stranger approach to nids. I play a elite nid army so in 1500 points, i'm only fielding 35 models. what ends up happening is the opponent does not have enough firepower to take out everything that threateniong and since everything is so tooled up, they do massive amounts of damage when they get there.
Point is it depends on your style of play. If you disaggree with the nids must use numberes to win strat then a gauntless army just may be for you.
@Talon: That is my list just the fex isn't so tooled up.
Two words for you guys : Genestealer Cults. They are great armies and consist of Genestealers and some other things. If you make your army completely of Genestealers and Ripper Swarms (forgot about them, didn't you!), you'd do fine. Genestealers hav FoC, so they're fast, and can be suped up majorly; they can be either 16pts or 30pts (mineare a massive 22pts each and they ripped apart 20 IG without losing any of themselves). If you have a Brood Lord (you should), infiltrate and take a retinue of as many as you can. The ripper swarms will take heaps of damage, so I suggest you take 2/3 squads. THe other 4/3 can be genestealers, and, if you're lacking numbers, GARGOYLES!!! They may be expensive (money &points) but they'll do the job well. They're just like gaunts, but faster, stronger and cheaper (relatively). Get Carnifex's in Elites - have 3 of them with Barbed Stranglers, Rending Claws and Enhanced Senses - they're cheap enough and when you have 3 Barbed Stranglers firing at Str. 8 AP 5 Rng. 36", you can be assured 1/2 hits. This is how you minimise the enemy's numbers before assaulting them, so either way you outnumber them.
"If a ninja does anything anywhere it won't make a sound, but if it does it's probably gonna be the last sound you hear."
But those fexs have ranged weaponry, which is against the fluff of my hivefleet.Originally Posted by Fast and Deadly
I think that a non-gaunt army is very possible because if you bring enough stealers you can still have alot of models to give your opponent things to think about. six squads of 12 stealers is a few stealers.
No, genestealer cults are the variation of an IG army that uses the set doctrines on the gamesworkshop website. If you mean a genestealer army, that is fine but just call it the correct thing.Originally Posted by Fast and Deadly

Well the stealer army is an option, But having 30-40 ripper swarms does the trick for me, in my zilla army. it's alot of wounds, and they are fast enough with leaping, and I am working on flying rippers as my fast attack! they keep the opponent buys untill the fex hits one, or tyrant.
