Welcome to Librarium Online!
I realize that a while back a bunch of us got this thread together and used it up, but I think it might be better to get another one started up for all these newer people to the forums to post their ideas in. There are an awful lot of topics about different types of units, and I think if we get all those put together in one place it should be better, and maybe some of us will actually use these new units! So, I'll post my Firewarrior Veterans for you all:
Firewarrior Veterans (0-1)
WS2, BS4, S3, T3, W1, I2, A1, LdAs FW (forgot!), Sv4+, Pts/Model14
Number/squad: Between six and twelve Veterans.
Weapons: Each model may be armed with either a Pulse Rifle OR a Pulse Carbine.
Options: The entire squad may take photon grenades at +1 pts/model and EMP grenades for +whatever pts/model (forgot this too). Up to two Veterans may replace their Pulse weapon for a Rail Rifle at +10 pts. One Veteran may be promoted to Shas'ui for +10 pts and has access to the Tau Armoury. The Shas'ui may be given a Markerlight for an additional 10 pts.
Transport: The squad may be mounted in a Devilfish transport. See appropriate entry for details.
Special: Due to working side by side for most of their lives, the Veteran squad is always Bonded. This is included in the points cost.
Firewarrior Veterans are some of the most rare finds amongst a Tau army. These Firewarriors are older and therefore much more experienced than the majority of the Shas'la and Shas'ui fielded in the Tau Empire. These Firewarriors have been offered time and again by their commanders the honour to pilot a Battlesuit of their choice. Yet time and again, they humbly declined the honour. There have always been many reasons as to why they choose to fight on as simple infantry rather than more protected, more specialised units; wishes to perfect the art of the Pulse Rifle, wishes to stay close to their brothers and sisters on the field of battle, wishes to be there to protect the younger Shas'la from harm during battle, and even more. All that is really known is that these Firewarriors are, while not of higher rank than any other Shas'la and Shas'ui, held in the highest esteem. Some are even old enough to have reached the rank of Shas'el if they had pursued their path, and while they may not demand it, the Shas'el in command always demands the utmost respect of these humble warriors.
I really like this unit but imo there is one fluff issue. How is it that these mere shas'la have bs4 when much mightier shas'ui and shas'vre have only bs3? if you could work that out i think this would be a perfect unit.
1) Perfecting the Pulse Rifle, as opposed to simply swapping technology so quickly.Originally Posted by crazyforcocoapuffs
2) Some can probably be as old as Shas'el themselves.
3) Games Workshop are idiots.
It's not the rank, it's the age and experience. They are only Shas'la because they refused to be of any higher rank than a Shas'ui leading the squad.
And Crisis Suits should be BS4 anyways.

Then again, we also believe anything in a Crisis Suit or higher should have BS4...
hmm...i like the 1st and 3rd point but i dont know if everyone would go for the second one...i think some people might just wonder why they havnt been promoted...unless you wanted to maybe create a sept that doesnt use suits and instead empahizes on training on foot but i dont know how popular that would be
They wouldn't be promoted simply because they don't want to.Originally Posted by crazyforcocoapuffs
They don't want to command troops. They'd rather look after their fellow troops on the field, side by side with them, than watching them get killed from the safety of a Crisis Suit/station of command.
And of course everyone won't go for them being as old as a Shas'el. But I can say that Shas'el aren't the only ones their age around.
overall i think that the veterans are a great idea and it got me thinking...i think this would be an awesome idea for a special character...a fire warrior commander (lets say shas'el) who believes that he should be there alongside his troops instead of in a suit

I think we need to find a new Shas'(x) ending for these guys.
We went over that too. ^_^Originally Posted by crazyforcocoapuffs
As well as an Ethereal Honour Guard made up of these Veterans...would-be Shas'el who would rather die protecting their Ethereal leaders than lead forces. (Can you say fanatics?)
The biggest problem with an HQ is that...what weapons would he have?
He has no special Leadership ability (as IG or SM), he has no CC abillity (as...a lot of HQs), he has very limited choices in weapons (pulse rifle, pulse carbine, rail rifle??) and is pretty weak without a Crisis Suit.
It's an awesome fluff idea, but the actual in-game effectiveness would be very low...however, I still think it'd be awesome.

14pts for a T3 4+ save model is a little harsh just like Hardened Vets in a IG army they will simply rapidly climb the target priority ladder.
Maybe if you gave them scout or infiltrate to represent thier improved Knowledge of battlefield techniques? then the might be worth it, or a "are always deployed last" rule?
Every time you read this sig: a fairie dies!
