Welcome to Librarium Online!
alright, so im painting a nid army, and im mostly done with the guants (near 100 of them....groan) but as im begning the bigger guys (warriors and MC) im realizing my paint scheme is somewhat restrictive and need advice on how to make the bigger models stand out yet stay part of teh army as a whole
basically all models are black all over....sprayed that way, yellow eyes, white teeth red tounge...but none of that stands out so much since they are so tiny on the models, the main part is the carapce, its still mostly black but the edges have been highlighted up to a bright orange (black to dark red to orange to brighter orange) in streaks along the very back edge of the armor plates in a similar style to the way GW did some of theirs (id reference you mainly to the old codex, the dark purple and orange ones...its closest to that)
but the problem is, ive already used orange and black, but i need one more color on the big gusy to make them stand out...yellow doesnt look right with the orange, same with blood red...and i feel like green or blue wouldnt fit since they are cool colors where as the rest of the model is warmer colors....also if i do get a 3rd color what areas should i bick out with it on the warriors and MCs?
could someone help me? (basically to sum up, 80% black models, with some dark red and orange...3rd color needed for big guys, and where do i put that 3rd color on the models?)
sorry that was alot of words, if i get my hands on a digital camera ill put up pics and hopeuflly make this a lot easier...
Do you do any highlighting on the skin? If you're leaving the skin black on the Gaunts, you could try drybrushing or highlighting the skin of the larger bugs with greys.
Barring that, you could add purple to the carapace of the larger bugs and not have it totally out of theme. Just go from black to dark purple to dark red to orange.

My small bugs paint scheme is kinda like yours (small black bugs, shiney black carapace, though mine have no stripes etc and instead have a stippled paint scheme of dark red to yellow forming a butterfly pattern on the carapace, whilst the rest of the small bugs body is just lightly drybrushed with grey and bleached bone)
wheras my bigger bugs are gonna be pale (white/grey) and fleshy looking - as physically it isnt possible for bugs to grow that large (due to carapace) i thought it would be cool to have mine less armoured looking, in a way to show HOW they were allowed to be so big.
however i still intend for them to have my dark red to yellow butterfly pattern on their back armour - to tie them in with the rest of my army (though THEIR carapace will probably be more like grey than shiny beetle black)
i havent tried it yet, but i think it would fit in nicely
maybe you could keep your stripe colours, but change the rest of your big bugs colours - this way they would maintain a general theme, but be starkly different. and also look more imposing
Apathy is its own reward...
i personaly dont do anything special. My paint scheem is bleached bone carpace. I cant think of any way to hilight it and my skin if blood red washed in black ink. guns are ultramerienes blue drybrushed in lytch purple and washed in black ink. Teeth are skill white and tubes and sstuff are done in a neon green. (forget specific name) i use that scheme on both big and little guys. the only thing that i have to show the difference between the guys is thier size and it seems to work fine.
