    Skyray, is it worth it??

well ive been looking at the skyray from forgeworld and was curios about its worth, so i figured id ask here to see if any IA 2004 owners who played Tau would know and think if it was worth its points cost(speaking of which what is it, i am sure posting points costs arent against the rules)
the reason i ask is because after all 6 missiles have been fired off you are essentially left with a devilfish with 2 markerlights(or are they tl'ed??) and a smart missile system......

Unless you have a problem with Flyers, just load up Devilfish and Hammerheads with Seekers. It's not really worth it.

I played with it untill the new tournament rules that don't allow imperial armoury, and it an dish out quite alot of punishment real fast, I usually go for a dengerous unit and wipe it out in 1 shot (wiping out a Death Comapny is priceless IMO), or pick off light tanks that you wouldn't bother with a railgun. Although a tad overpriced.

The Skyray was designed as an anti air wepon system. Flyers are Vultures, Valkaries, Thunderhawk Gunships...
There once was a Lord named Vlad,
Who's fighting skillz really were mad.
    He killed and he maimed,
He spilled blood in Khorne's name.
And the fact that he's legal makes me glad
(special thanks to Uriel Zarium for the last line/touching it up)

The problem is that it can only carry 6 Seeker Missiles, and a Smart Missile System, for 200 points. And it can not only use it's TL Markerlight only for it's own missiles, it can't use other markerlights.
The thing can rape Flyers-a TL 4+ and a 2+ to land up to 6 Seekers on it, but it's not great against other things. For armor killing, you're MUCH better with an Ionhead. For tanks, a Railgun.

so a sky ray is uselss against ground based targets?? and broadside did i read this right, it can only use its markerlights for its own missiles?? it cant use them to guide in other guns for the 2+ hits?

well from what you guys tell me i shouldnt bother with it and the more i think about it, for 200 pts. its useless.....

Kinda and yes. It's not USELESS, but any other Hammerhead turret will work better. And, yes, it's markerlight is the only thing that can guide it's missiles.

True it's a bit of a one-hit-wonder. Once the Seekers are used up, it's not much cop.
If I have the luxury of knowing who I'll be fighting (i.e. not a tourny) then I might use it against Necrons or the Blood Angels Death company (as Wolf-Pack mentioned) as it's one of the Tau's only things that can put down a decent volume of S8 AP3 shots (negating the power armour and WBB & FNP rolls).
It has a high points cost because it is very effective against armies with flyers. Sadly the 200 odd points make it unviable in most other circumstances. A HammerHead represents much better value for the points.
    Do the things

yep, still the 200 pts are overpriced, the way i calculated it, if you could add 6 seeker missiles to a 90 pt hammerhead for 10 pts each ud get 150pts, then add in 2 markerlights for +20 = 170 and hte smartmissile system is plus 20 as well i believe, so u get 190 if you could get this configuration manually, in my mind, automatic configurations should be cheaper than manual so tack of about 20 points and u get 170 add in the fact that it only has six shots and take off another 30 pts and you get 140

so i believe it should be 140 pts instead of 200.....
