Welcome to Librarium Online!
I have been checking out the Forge world Tau models, I really love the new crisis suits and the new commander model, also been giving some thought to the Pirahnas and Tetras. With the release of the new Imperial armour book (rules at last)I really want to buy some new cool stuff.
My question is this. I have seen reference on this and other forums about Forge world models being phased out or even being outright banned from tournies. Is this true???
I thought Forge world were official units / models you could use in any list. Whats the understanding on this as I dont want to waste a lot of money on models I can only use in certain games.
Even my local GW manager doesn't like allowing Forge world models into vet games nights. So whats the point in releasing models if you cant use them in a competitive competition or at vets evenings.
Any info on this would be aprreciated.
They are called Forgeworld for a reason. They do NOT use GW rules.
This is why I don't use them and don't plan to. No one can ever question a models viability if it is striaght GW.
I have heard many a poster say that a lot of tournies do allow the use of Forgeworld models, most of those were Rogue Trader tournies.

Actually that is slightly off, FW is part of the GW portfolio so you could argue it that way. However most tourneys say GW models only - they wont allow forgeworld, but this really applies to the rules rather than the actuall models, check it withthe tourney organisers, but I supect, for example, If you used FW spaced or extra armour, or the FW dreads, those that use stanard codex rules, not mortis dreads, you would be fine, the issue appears when you start using FW rules
Yes that seems to be my take on the situation, I would not mind if I could not use the rules for the new battlesuits but could use the models because the models are so cool.Originally Posted by Cheredanine
Excludes the pirahnas and tetras though as they dont have a direct equiv in the Tau standard list.
I think the only trouble would be if the tournie organisers insisted on whatever is specified as equipment on the XV8 is shown on the models(or vice versa) as some of the Forge world models have various equipment parts built into the suits (the markerlight and the missile pod varients for instance) which I dont use.
I find the whole FW & GW thing a bit confusing, if they are seperate as Kauyon specified then really you would have two seperate gaming systems, one for GW models and one for FW models. But as I understand it the imperial army books are for use with GW 40k system and not intended as a stand alone set of rules.
WHEN WILL THE MADNESS END!!!!!
seriously if i owned GW i would make VDR and FW models mandatory at allrogue trader tourneys....
anyway, i thought that FW and VDR were allowed in GT's??
Honestly, I agree here...minus the mandatory stuff.Originally Posted by chaos0xomega
However, I don't see there being any golden rules about FW models in tourneys. I simply think it's up to the manager of the shop itself, not a GW-laid rule for tournaments. If your particular shop doesn't allow them, doesn't mean that another shop somewhere near you won't.
I don't think VDR should be allowed in actual tournies, just because it's so easy to abuse, but Forge World should.
And you can just use Forge World models to sit in for regular GW models. Any of the Forge World Crisis Suits would work fine for a regular Crisis Suit (With the exception of the one with the SMS, but you can just call that a TL Missile Pod).

Mech Tau Cadre: 2000 points, needs paint and magnets.
Paladins of Avalon (SW):-1500 points, needs paint.
I don't see why people want to use the FW models/rules. Personally, they aren't that great. At least not worth the money. $110 for the rule book, then another $40 or so for one of those Crisis Suits....If you have the money, go ahead.
As for the topic, I think they should be allowed in Tournies, to an extent. Don't pull out a Titan, but you can use the more basic units *Dreadnoughts, Knarlocs, Those new IG guys*.
That's just my opinion.

Blood for the Blood God! Beer for the Bronze Keg!
the way i see it they should be in tournaments, cuz VDR things are normally more expensive points wise then an official creation of equal power and everything, and thus i tend to see it as not being abusable, and as for other things, such as titans they should be there because they are such a large point sink for the player that uses them that it requires much more strategy for the army to succeed

New tactics, new models, etc. etc.?
If I had the money I would definitely get stuff from FW. And who cares if the rules "aren't that great"..? They can't make them super good, otherwise it'd be completely stupid. They are balanced, and that's what matters.
As for VDR, well, if I did own a shop I would allow VDR in my tournaments but only on one condition: I must first pre-approve the creation. Simple as that. *shrug* It'd be nice to see some creativity instead of a bunch of generic, balanced marine armies all the time.
