I recently purchased a rather large Eldar army off of ebay the other day, and I started going through it and my codex making army lists and picking units I liked. I then looked at the warp spiders entry. At first glance they didn't quite seem to cut it, being no AP value and some other minor things I didn't like. They would probabely do good against some armies (IG anyone?), but I didn't think they were "good" enough to take them. I mearly dismissed them and started looking at other units.
But the more and more I read the codex (DOW had a little to do with it to), I started to grow attached to the unit. I personally didn't like the cost vs. efficiency, but I liked how the unit worked and looked. There was just something I liked about the assault move, the surprise stuff and the look of the models themselves. I noticed this to some degree in the other armies I've played, but this is the first time I kinda noticed it.
So my question was, how often do you guys take a unit based on you liking how it works or looks over how well it really does. At what point do you start to say, nah... Also, how much of your army do you pick like this (to avoid getting stomped), and do you ever compromise taking a unit you don't like (or multiple units you kinda like) just because it would own in the game? (ex: I'm not fond of Broadside teams in Tau, but they work well in my army so I take them anyways.)
On the reverse side of that one, I think Dark Reapers would do good but I don't really care for them so I don't take them.
Just curious to see what you guys's opinions were. Also please list which units you like that you take just because you like that unit (doesn't have to be just eldar)
NOTE: The opinions I had above were more for example purposes than anything. This thread was NOT meant to discuss particular units str's and weakness's in depth.
Once again, Warp Spiders are one of the all around best non-vehicle models the Eldar have.. You would be very unwise to dismiss them
Who cares about AP when you wound on 2+ against most units and hit on a 3+. They're one of the few units in the eldar army which are good against *everything* and that is what wins games
They're extremely mobile and often I can keep them out of harms way the entire game while they lay down crippling firepower. They can kill most vehicles, all troop types and can escape hand to hand fairly easily. Not to mention they have a 3+ armor save
My Eldar army wins because of its durability and mobility.. Falcons + warp spiders are kings
The most underrated Eldar units are generally the best.. I cant remember how many times people say that Falcons suck
They are the BESt tank in the entire game are more or less the backbone of the Eldar. Eldar are a very poor army to play based on theoryhammer or just making up army. They're subtle and you can lose very easily if you are prone to miscalculating

Or if not my summary of the thread is: How much (if any) of your army is because you think its cool even though you think they're not good. (Don't include units you think are cool and good)
Please don't argue over why you think units are good or not, there are many factors that people weigh in that is individualized (price, points, weapons, stats, save, movement, who they play, how they fit in with the rest of the army etc.)
Hail, Shas'o Tau Dev'n Kauyon here.
I play mainly Tau, which is because I like them.
Also, I agree with the Broadside comment, I like them, so I want to use them.
Sadly, they did not make the cut, but they are always there trying to wedge themselves into the next list. ^_^
I plan on playing Eldar, mostly Rangers and Striking Scorpions SOLELY because I like them so much! I'm so a stealthy guy at heart! (Thus the Stealths in my Tau force and CP. ^_^)
I also plan on playing some IG solely because I love the look/feel of Storm Troopers.
Also, the Missile Launcher is one of my all time favorite heavy weapons, but I don't like SM's, so they will have one of those as well. ^_^
Sig by:Knape, The Celestial, and Marlinspike, thanks guys!
This will probably sounds really stupid. Since i play Ultramarine, I love Tyrannid War Vet. I used them in almost every battle, even when Im not aganist Nid. mainly because I worked so hard on converting them to left them unused.
Comon man, doesn't sound stupid to me! If you like em take em, I think most people can agree on that (never cared for powergamers).Originally Posted by VSushi
BTW, you three gave great responses, thats what I meant!
One example of this I really like, is in the Tau army I had this guy I played against who really liked kroot (I also played Tau at the time). I'm not sure if he like them because of fluff, but I know he thought they were good. I agreed, but told him I didn't use them because I just didn't like them. He never really understood this ...
I take swooping hawks just cuz I like them, they are really a waste of points, not as huge a waste as some things, but they're definately not the most effective unit in my army. I like em, and having units you like to play with is a major thing in how much fun you have.
I'm a heavy IG player and I don't know how many times I've heard just before a game: "You take Sentinels? Those things suck! hahaha"
Almost every game that I take my Sentinels, though, they earn back their points or at least prove their worth monumentally. Personally, I'll take them every chance I get just because they are one of my favorite looking units.
The thing that kills me about Eldar is that their units are either useless or broken, and if you've got a smart opponent, then he will find a way to take all the broken units and not take the useless ones.
For instance: Guardians are useless; Warp Spiders are broken. Fire Prisms are useless; Falcons are broken. Jet Bikes are useless; War Walkers are broken.
The above, however, is just my opinion and I have been known to go crazy.
Howdy all. Well, in WFB I play Slayers. In anything above 1500 pts they lose, ALWAYS, (well maybe not always, but, it seems that way). The point being they are fun army to play. "Hold on, your little dude with the swing axes just held up and killed two chaos spawn? Holy frag" I love 'em. And you can rant and scream about unavenged wrongs, misdeeds etc.
p.s. Hourglass, that Durex link in your sig is AWESOME.
