Welcome to Librarium Online!
I was wandering if Tau could be good in close combat? Or do you hav to use kroots for CC?
"For the Greater Good!"
Possibly the easiest question I ever had to answer.
Fact is that, besides the farsight enclave, no tau will ever stand much chance in close combat. Face it, we have the best guns in the game. Our line troopers can fire a gun with longer reach than the almighty bolter and our tank hunter weapon can tear through both the monolith and land raider.
The only way to stand a chance is to be part of the farsight enclave (but lose several choices) or take kroot...
Take my love, take my land, take me to where I cannot stand; I don't care I'm still free, you can't take the sky from me.

Tau are not even average in CC. Low WS, low I, low S and low T mean that they will get their butts handed to them by pretty much everyone.
The Kroot are much better, but still not great.

the real question is not, Could they be good? its, Why would you want them to be good?Originally Posted by Ka'shu

but yes the kroot are basically the only close combat unit youll get in the tau army, or the ethereal or O'shovah.
Just to backup a few people: no. Tau are not a CC-oriented army. If you want a CC army I recommend you try Space Marines (including DH), Orks, Tyranids, Eldar, or Dark Eldar.
Kroot are NOT meant to be Tau's answer to CC. Kroot are much more effective as a counter assault unit and an infiltrating fire support unit. Cheap and decent with shooting, as well as getting good cover saves, is a very fine thing.
No, it is safe to say that the Tau are the single most pathetic CC army in the game. You'll never hear anyone talk about a fearsome Tau FW charge. Instead you'll hear in battle reports...SM Turn two. SM squad assaults FW squad and kills all, consolidates into next FW squad and repeats...
The only honorable options left to we combatants is seppuku or semantics...which amount to the same thing really.
They ALMOST beat my grot squad once... ALMOST!
Short answer: No.
Long answer: Why the hell do you even ask?! Their average WS is 2!
Well, Ethereals aren't too bad in CC. But anybody who brings an Ethereal as a CC unit must be punished by eating said Ethereal.
