Chaos Black with Brazen Brass armor....
It's like mine, but Brass instead of Boltgun
Half Gods are worshiped with Wine and Flowers. Real Gods are worshiped in Blood.
Blood for the Blood God! Beer for the Bronze Keg!
try graveyard earth with shadow grey trim, it's dark, it's brooding, it's nighttime desert

Sorta off topic, but the paint scheme used throughout the Codex: Tau is god-awful.
I use black undercoat with a white drybrush to get the raised areas, then pick out details with red/silver/gold. I use a dead world base, its simple and can look nice with minimal cost and paint.
I used a mostly black undersuit with blood red armor, though there is some variation:
Chaos Black undersuit lightly drybrushed with Fortress Gray. Blood Red armor with the seams left black undercoat. Bleached Bone highlights on knee and shoulder pads to denote rank and unit. Lightning Blue sensors, weapon vents and antennas. Everything but the undersuit is then thoroughly glassed with a layer of Gloss Varnish (Reaper Miniatures stuff, not Citadel) to give it that shell-like sheen.
Pathfinders are a variation of this using Red Gore for armor.
Battlesuits: (XV-8, XV-88 and variations)
Same as Fire Warriors, except Boltgun Metal hightlighted with Mithril Silver is used for the "undersuit" parts of the chassis and Chaos Black is used on the main torso to signify squad leaders and NCOs. Command suits also sport Dragon Gold (Reaper again, but Citadel Burnished Gold is close) elements to signify rank. Once again, the whole model is glassed for shine and protection.
Drones are painted in a complimentary scheme with two variations: Red center, Black outer ring on the disk is a Battlesuit or Fire Warrior escort Drone. Black center with a Red outer ring is a vehicle or independent-squadron Drone.
Black armor with Red Gore details and Lightning Blue sensors, displays, etc. Team Leaders have a Blood Red cable on their Markerlight and silver detailing on their armor.
My Kroot are currently unpainted, but I actually indend to use something close to the Studio scheme for them.
My ethereal is painted with Red Gore robes highlighted with Blood Red, and under-robes painted Red Gore and washed with thinned-down Dragon Gold. His mantle is also Dragon Gold highlighted with Shining Gold. The rings on his scalp lock are likewise. The gems on the mantle and in the badges of office are Lightning Blue highlighted with white, and the whole model was lightly varnished.
Fire Warrior Devilfish are painted in the same manner as the Fire Warriors, Red and Black with Silver details and Blue sensors and windows. The central "spine" of the tank is Bleached Bone with Red or Silver panels to denote which squad they belong to.
Pathfinder Devilfish are painted with the same variation on Fire Warrior colors as Pathfinders are, with Red Gore replacing Blood Red as the primary color.
Hammerhead Gunships are painted in the same manner as Fire Warrior Devilfish, but all of them have silver nose, wing and engine detailing as well as silver detailing on the primary weapon. The lead tank (the three Hammerheads, fluff-wise are a squadron) has Dragon Gold detailing.
I get a lot of compliments about the scheme I've chosen for my Tau, and I think the red fits with the army fluff quite well -the Cadre is from Vior'la and is led by a hyper-aggressive and somewhat bombastic Shas'O that the Auns would have canned long ago but for his stellar track record.
The most common complaint I recieve is that this is a WAR game, and my army would not take to the field with BRIGHT RED ARMOR and vehicles that did not have some measure of camoflage.
To these people, I merely smile and point them at the nearest Space Marine codex. Any who continue to argue at this point are deemed fools and Railgun'd.

My firewarriors are black undersuit with red armor and silver parts. There are pics in the gallery somewhere.
But you want a dark color scheme hu Ok, huh? Ok well here are a few ideas:
-Black undersuit with very dark purple armor.
-Dark Angels green armor with black undersuit.
-Dark brown undersuit with chaos black armor
There once was a Lord named Vlad,
Who's fighting skillz really were mad.
He killed and he maimed,
He spilled blood in Khorne's name.
And the fact that he's legal makes me glad
(special thanks to Uriel Zarium for the last line/touching it up)
I use Catachan green armor (goblin green highlights) with Burnt Brown jumpsuits (cloth) and Brass identifiers....
yeah, it's close to the codex ones (which i didn't realize when i picked it but whatever) it's decently dark when done with a black primer coat (i jus dry-brush white then brown for the cloth to make it stand out)
if you hit the link in my sig, you can see the pics...
i know a guy who went brass & silver armor with black jumpsuits, and while it has potential, it's an eyesore...
and i did a prototype one in silver armor with orange identifiers and white jumpsuits which came out rather nice, (tho i'd prolly darken the cloth a bit to like a fortress grey)
a darker variant of it would be
Boltgun Metal, with a 1:1 mix Blazing Orange/Gore Red identifiers, and shadow grey or codex grey jumpsuits...
problem is, can't quite see the vehicle color scheme for that...
the Orange/Silver/White i was gona do the tanks like riceboy cars... silver with orange racing stripes and red detailing...
like an F-zero reject...

"JESUS SAVES! the rest of your models each take a wound."
I use Regal Blue over a black undercoat, with some areas of Shadow Grey and a 4-1 mix of Blood Red and Chaos Black (Kind of a crimson colour).
Burn the land and boil the sea. You can't take the sky from me.

Mech Tau Cadre: 2000 points, needs paint and magnets.
Paladins of Avalon (SW):-1500 points, needs paint.
I use snakebite leather over black for the FW, snakebite leather armour panels with black cloth and burnished gold detailing on the pulse rifles. But I paint the Shas-Ui Shadow grey armour panels with Mithril silver detailing on the PR.Originally Posted by Grimgnaw
HH ar e black and Snakebite leather with Burnished gold Rail rifle detailing and yes you guessed it Shadow grey for the command HH and Mithril silver detailing on the Railgun.
The same applys to the XV8 suits commander Shadow Grey armour panels etc.
The shadow grey looks good against the predominent snake leather and black colour scheme and adds some individuality to the models.
My Stealths are black with Shadow Grey and Space wolves Grey urban camo and they look realy good
My Kroot are the colourful aspect of my army, catachan green with loads of detailing on the quills and feathers etc.
