how many swooping hawks does it take to form an effective bodyguard for an exarch? I'm looking to expand my swooping hawks squad up from 5 elves to more so they have better lasting power in close combat. I sense the exarch could draw some attention on a round when he racks up like 15 power weapon hits so I want to ensure the squad's ability to keep functioning thru a protracted melee.
thanks for the advice to come in advance
OK this really has been done to death in posts, Acticles and in WD at one point.
Problem with hawks is there is only really one effective and EFFICIENT use for them - the exarch delivery system.
The point being to get that sustained assault, web of skulls/shuriken pistol weilding Exarch into combat. You seem clear on this
But the point is that whilst it is nice that hawks can act as abaltive armour until he gets there, they are very very expensive abaltive armour, and the exarch, for all he is lethal, is fragile and not as expensive as most HQ models.
So, dont treat him, or expect him to opperate as a HQ, just a cheap, nasty model, then you get to what he is about, the body guard wilst nice, does not justify the cost, it is, howver, a necessary evil to have a squad of 5 so stick with that and dont burn points needlessly
one thing I'd note is that the swooping hawks exarch is not cheap points-wise..mine comes in somewhere near 75ish pts with the web of skulls/sustained assault - the whole squad makes my point budget hurt but I like the models and the exarch has some fun rules so they stay.
fair enough, good advice about the fact that the extra squad members arent justified at 21pts each - you're right, that's far too many pts to spend on one more 4+ armor save.
