Welcome to Librarium Online!
Well, I've recently been adding models to my swarm which has sat on my desk gathering dust for month. I have a 3rd ed Hive Tyrant coming my way sometime shortly, and want to get wings on it.
Now, I have perused the Games Workshop website for bitz and the best wings I can see to use would be the:
Plastic Dragon Wings Complete 99380299002
Blood Dragon Nightmare Right Wing 9947020709510
Blood Dragon Nightmare Left Wing 9947020709511
The problem seems to be how I would attach said wings to the carapace of the Hive Tyrant. I imagine that both wings would need to be altered a bit and that perhaps I would need to use a bit of green stuff to assist in the modification.
I've looked around the forums and used the search option to find as many hive tyrants as I can, and have seen many different variants. Some variants seem to use the wings in the upper arm sockets, but I am looking to go for a Twin Linked Devourers x 2 on this model so having all of the arm sockets would be preferable.
Any advice you could offer, or perhaps even a detailed tutorial would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I have done this before, both using the arm mounts and also mounting the wings just behind the existing sockets for the arms. In the first case, I then used a drill bit to indent the plastic wing mounting point so that the talons could be mounted into them. Also right on top of the original mounting point.
One thing I found was two of the Reaper mini wings. I was just worried about the size, since I think they are pretty darn big. Talking about 12" to 13" wingspread for the two.
Here is one:
And here is the model for the others (because the wings are available seperate, but no picture in the entry):
Whatever you do, make sure you pin them using two pins for each wing. I'd drill at least 1/4" into the body to give you a nice deep mortis and tenon joint.
Thanks for the advice. I need to dig out my pin vice from wherever it disappeared to.
If anyone out there has some good shots of their Winged Tyranids, I would love to see a close up of the actual point that the wing and tyrant are joined. Thanks.
if you have spare money you could buy the winged hive on the GW website. these are made to easily fit wings on them.
otherwise I would say pin them and use a lot of glue to let it stay in place.
Don´t mess with the dicegod
Nice, just noticed the winged hive tyrant they have on the UK GW site. Didn't notice that on the US one. I would consider ordering it, but I am modifying the previous Hive Tyrant model. However, I did order the "Plastic Dragon Wings Complete" from the US GW site so hopefully I'll manage to get those onto the Tyrant without much trouble.
The 3rd edition model Tyrant is more easier to equip with wings than the 4th edition model.
You can easily put the dragon wings on it's back.
Yeah, the 4th Ed model is too fat for dragon's wings...Originally Posted by Dreachon

Nice Winged Hive Tyrant, almost exactly the same color scheme I use as well. What I am most curious about however is where exactly the wings fit on. Is it between the armored plates on the HT's back? If someone could provide a close up picture of where the wings are joined to the HT I would appriciate it.
Ive stuck the Blood Dragon Nightmare wings on my 4th ed HT. If i can work out ho i can upload pics onto here, i will put some up. The wings fit very nicely (altho pinning was involved to get them to stay on) and they look good.
Edit: Ive managed to upload my pics, i'm just not sure how to link to them
