Welcome to Librarium Online!
I get the impression that nobody uses shredders. This surprises me, since I would think that they would be a godsend against tough but lightly armoured armies such as Orks or the larger Tyranids.
Can anybody fill me in on why Blasters are preferred?
Easy. . . Blasters are miniature Dark Lances. Shredders only have a value vs armies with poorly armoured troops and players with tight formations. They cost twice as much as Blasters and their additional range and their blast radius certainly doesn't outweigh their lower strength and lack of AP -- at least, not enough to justify that large of a cost difference.
Why do the survivors remain anonymous -- as if cursed -- while the dead are revered? Why do we cling to what we lose while we ignore what we still hold?
Name none of the fallen, for they stood in our place, and stand there still in each moment of our lives.
--Duiker, "Deadhouse Gates"
Follow Ostsol's advice. That is why.
That notwithstanding, shredders are ungodly when employed against Guard, Tyranids, or Orks.
But in a tournament, you're much better off getting blasters.

"And whoever wants to be a creator in good and evil, must first be an annihilator and break values. Thus the highest evil belongs to the greatest goodness: but this is--being creative."
~ Friedrich Nietzsche ~
That makes sense. Pity they aren't the same point cost, or people might actually use them.
Thanks for the input, guys.
Shredders aren't good against Tyranids unless they're given to someone with advanced movement (Raider Warriors, Reaver Jetbike, Hellions).
Shredders have a 12" range right? Coupled with the 6" move, you have an 18" threat zone. Considering that most first wave Tyranids have an assault range of 18-24", you'll never even get a shot off.
The problem for me is the 4th ed. rules re: placing the blast template. In 3rd ed., you placed it to cover as many bases as possible, so you'd often get 3 full hits and a partial against hord armies like 'nids. Now, you have to place the center hole directly over a model, meaning that the most you'll EVER get is one full hit. They're just not worth taking anymore, when you can take a blaster instead that will blow away almost anything you hit.
