Welcome to Librarium Online!
To me there is really no comparison. I will always take a SoL over a warscythe anyday. Reason being, why downgrade yourself . Sure you can get 2 shots off at 24 inches instead of 3 at 12. But that is really the only advantage. If you think that is worth the 10 points cost to switch out go right ahead.
What does everyone else think about this? What changes would you like to see on the warscythe?
I would like to see it a a super armor pen weapon. Make it 3d6 and take the highest 2 for armor pen. That would more then make it worth it. But i sure some of you wil find that over powering.
Ohh and one more thing. Can we all yell at GW to make models with the SoL again. I'm lazy and hate to modify :p
The Warsythe ignores invulnerable saves....I can't think of it needing any changes whatsoever.
It's just a more specialised thing, the SOL is more useful against Marines yes, which is why it can be regarded as better. However against other foes such as Daemon Heavy Chaos, Eldar, Dark Eldar HQs (to get round around the Shadow Field), or foes who use Assassins, I'd actually take the Warscythe.
So it all depends on who play.
Akito... just to make it just that less worthwhile... When you take the Warscythe upgrade, you lose the shooting attack alltogether... so you don't get 2 at 24"... just a CC weapon that is really killer... sorry to burst your bubble...
Thanks for pointing that out. I did not have the codex with me when i posted. I still feel that the SoL is in general a better weapon. Yet the warscythe will be useful versus demon princes and the like.
The Warscythe that the Lord gets to carry does not shoot at all. The Pariahs' version of it explicity says it has a built-in Gauss Blaster.
I take the Warscythe on my kills-big-things lord.
WHFB: Dwarfs || WH40k: Imperial Fists, Necrons || WM/H: Trollbloods || BFG: Necrons
One would think a Scythe to be a blessing vs things like DE.
The pros and cons of a SoL or a WS are really what you want your Lord to be doing. If you want a support Lord that stays in Res Orb range, there is no need for a WS. The SoL has decent shooting (High S, low AP) and counts as a power weapon in CC.
If you want a character/tank hunting Lord (most likely on a Des Body accompanied by Wraiths or Scarabs) then you'll want the WS. Ignoring Inv saves is almost required if you are chasing down HQ or IC units. And against Tanks, the WS basically gives the weilder the MC ability to pierce the armor.
Gyauayuayuayua! Ja! Ve vill crush da little girly men in deir little girl men awrmor! Ve vill see owur enemies driven befowur us, und hear da lahmentaytions of deir wemen. Und from owur home planet, de stayte uf Califowurnia, ve vill lawunch owur mighty offensive. Even if you kill us, ve'll be bach!! Gyauayauyauyauyau!

I believe that an often run combo with the WS is Lord + WS + D. body + Phase shifter + phylacary, with a group of wariths or Scarbs.Originally Posted by Gojiratoho

The first time you assault a tricked out DE Archon with a destroyer lord packing a phase shifter and a warscythe you'll understand exactly why the warscythe is useful.
The other time is when you haul his big butt 18" into the side armor of a parked landraider and blow it sky high. After they've killed all your heavy destroyers, a d.lord with a warscythe is the most efficient anti-vehicular weapon in the necron list. yes warriors can do the same job, but if the enemy still has infantry on the board the warriors should really be concentrating their fire on the soft squishy stuff rather than the vehicles.
Wake. Rise. Destroy. Conquer.
We have done so once. We will do so again.
actually you will find that both of your examples are incorrect.
-a tricked out archon can beat a destroyer lord any day, he will go first, with his 5-6 attacks, and beat the **** out of you with his agoniser, with a 3+ 4+ to wound your lord, he probably also has a retinue of incubi who also strike first, hit on a 3+, and have S4 power weapons. thus, you do not want to attack dark eldar heroes with anything short of a ctan, you would instead just shoot one squad of warriors into them, and they are dead.
-against space marines your lord should not be wasting his time with a tank, he is one of the most effecive units in your army at killing marines, so he should do that instead. your warriors are much more efficient at killing AV14 vehicles than they are at killing space marines, use them to kill the tanks instead.
as for the SOL or warsythe, i think that you shouldn't be using your lord for the sole purpose of hunting that one enemy commander with an invulnerable save, or for taking out a tank which your warriors or scarabs could take on much easier. thuus a war sythe is never really worth it. the only time i have ever taken one was when i faced armored company.
