Welcome to Librarium Online!
So I'm thinking of starting a 40K army and the thing is I havent decided whether i will be goin with eldar or necrons. The thing is i want an army that is fairly all around good against most opponents for tournament play and such. Easy to paint would be a nice bonus as well. So really my question is are necrons an army with the capability of making a balanced list that can be successful. Right now its either necrons or an all aspect warrior eldar army so any tips would be much appreciated. If it applies i have palyed fantasy before not to many games but i have played with elves and lizardmen and enjoyed lizardmen most of all(not sure if that really applies). Anyways any replies would be great. Thanks
take necrons over eldar. necrons are super easy to paint. they are forced to make balanced lists due to phase out. they are all around very good.
eldar are harder to paint but with an all aspect army it wont be very balanced.
necrons, are a very unique army. While they are good a shooting, its not nessicarily a shooty army. That said, its not a cc army either. however, necrons after the first turn (im most cases) fight like SM's. But i still suggest crons for these reasons. Crons are the most resilient force there is. its really fun to see a squad pass a morale check from 50% shooting casualties and then proceed to have all they fallen get right back up. you either hate of love crons. but they are really rewarding.

I'm actually going to have to go against the grain here on this one and say go with the Eldar. In general, the Eldar are a more well balanced army than Necrons and although they both are armies that require much cunning and above all finesse to play, the necrons require more. Some might disagree that the eldar are a more balanced army but I think the diffirence in unit choices between the two armies speaks for itself. And as far as the painting goes, although the Eldar are a bit more painstaking to paint, who wants the same run-o-the-mill looking necrons anyway? Plus as an added bonus for tournaments and such you'll have a slight edge because the eldar are one of the most unprepared for armies in the game. Typical tourney goers will expect and make counter-measures against Marines and other common armies such as Necrons, Tau, and Tyranids. On the whole the Eldar offer way more choices than the necrons in terms of what you can take and do and are more beginner friendly than the Necrons who can be downright hard work to play with such few choices and high stakes(Phase out and universally high points costs can be a problem). At the same time though, do yourself a favor and check out the two codexses and compare them next time your in your local hobby store and see what suits you best.

eldar are by far harder to play than necrons
they require more skill to know what units to take and use them right. if you go to the eldar section all you see are threads with help me with this unit and is this unit even worth taken. as said before necrons can take a pounding and still keep going they are more forgiving since they can wothstand more. eldar are more fragile and are harder to use.

I agree, I would also adice you to try some Craft World Eldar, especialy biel-tan.On the whole the Eldar offer way more choices than the necrons in terms of what you can take and do and are more beginner friendly than the Necrons who can be downright hard work to play with such few choices and high stakes
Try to porx your army or borrow one , try to play you`ll know what is the best for you.
Another thing about necrons is that you can get bored with playineg them quite fast, cause (as it was said before) they have very poor unit choice not mentioning the equipmnet ( hmm..disruption fields or not disruption fields, that is the question)
1. you will find with that the eldar also have very limited unit choices because only about half the units are any good, so you will be seeing a lot of the same units every game. read: wraithlord, striking scorpions, falcons, vipers.
2.also IMHO the eldar simply do not look as cool as the necrons. they all have ridiculous hats, and stupid poses which you wouldn't get into when actually fighting. also every unit is usually parinted differently, so you lose the one cohesive army look. necrons on the other hand look awesome with green rods, and rows upon rows of identital melatic skelatal warriors, and the army actually looks like are one figting force. as for actuall ease of painting, the eldar are very hard to get right with all of the armor plates, and the cracks in between. the necrons on the other hand don't have to be perfect in sharp detail, as they've been sitting in a tomb for millions of years, and are covered in rust and mold, and such.
3. as for one balanced take all comers list, both armies will probably do fine. the necrons are extremely versitle, especially the warriors. the biel tan basically have the same aproach to everything, so they won't really have a problem either. as for which army is better for a beginer, i would say the necrons, as it it very easy to take a decent list, while with the eldar, about 1/2 the army is unts you really don't want to take, especially as a beginer.
Procrastination- hard work often pays off over time, but laziness always pays off now.
Indifference- it takes 43 muscles to frown, and 17 to smile, but none to just sit there with a dumb look on your face.

I second all that tiaxrulesall said in his post.
Yeah, he pretty much covered it...Originally Posted by Word_Bearer_Apostle
Though tiax, I must say that not only do eldar tanks look much cooler than our foot models, but I think you should realize that my paint schemes aren't the only ones out there. Not all Biel-tan armies look as though every unit was recruited from a different part of the galaxy. You can make VERY cool looking armies, using darker colors.
And yes, our hats are stupid looking...
But in general, crons would definitely be a better choice for a beginner.

necrons are an unique race :realmad: there so freakin hard to kill, when i kill a bunch they jsut pop back up, if you can use necrons very well like this guy i versed then you will do quite well,
he had 2 destroyer lords and kepted it behind 3 squads fo wraiths and charged me and killed all my fire warriors
