is it possible to have 3 different weapons on all 3 of a commanders hard points, and then having extras hard wired?
yes, but you can only fire two of them in any one firing phase.
Assuming that you have taken the Multi-tracker as a HW option, that is.

Yep, that's right.
There once was a Lord named Vlad,
Who's fighting skillz really were mad.
He killed and he maimed,
He spilled blood in Khorne's name.
And the fact that he's legal makes me glad
(special thanks to Uriel Zarium for the last line/touching it up)
As already stated, yes you can, and its not a bad idea either (that is if you dont mind sacrificing a shield generator in favor of more tactical flexiblity).
This is only a good idea (in my opinion) for a Shas'O. Since he's hitting on 2+ no need to twin-link anything. I'll usually equip my Shas'O with a plasma gun and missile pod for most shooting purposes, and then stick a fusion gun on there for when it gets close and personal (mainly for tank hunting).
You could always attatch a lone Shas'O to a full gun drone squad. That way you wouldnt need a shield generator now that you'd have 8 nimble little "meat" shields to take the fire.
some excellent suggestions there!!
my commander got blown to pieces by dark reapers yesterday evening!
He had flamer, fusion blaster and m/tracker.
But only two gun drones, which died straight away, and no shield, so he didnt last long.
But after reading your replies, he shall be back, and more protected next time!!
Just one very important point, do not attach the commander to the Drone squad! just have the drone squad close and make sure the drone squad is the closest to the enemy unit, that way the commander cannot be targeted because of his Independent character status.Originally Posted by silentleeb
If you attach him to a squad and it takes enough hits the commander is taking hits (due to the mixed armour and majority rules), if you do not attach him he cannot be shot.
I give my Shas'O a Shield Gen (in case of CC or template weapons, or the odd lucky lascannon shot) and a Drone Squad.
I take it from the above your taking a drone controler and 2 drones, dont they are a waste of time and points. The Shield Gen is 20 points as opposed to 22 for the cont and 2 gun drones and offers much better protection
Give him a SG and a drone squad and I practically guarantee you he will remain practically untouched.
Oh one last point why have you given your commander a flamer, for gods sake find the points from somewhere (lose the drones) and give him a Plasma. Flamers do not belong on XV8 suits ever.
why would you want to take a shield gen, there a waste of points when you can protect him with independent character rules.
using 3 weapons is a good idea, thats what i did and it did quite well, try using missile pods, plasma rifle or burst cannon/fusion blaster also in combination with multi tracker.
Shiel gens on Shas'O are not a waste, Ind Char staus does not protect you from the power weapon wielding nut case who caught you and has you in close combat (and before you say it yes everyone gets caught in CC sometimes), it also helps when someone like Imp Guard drops a nice ordnance template on your commanders head, or a Vindicare targets your precious commander, or Eldar Mind wars his ass, shall I carry on.Originally Posted by ReaverRider
The Shield Gen is 20 pts and thats good for a 4+inv, most armies can only take a few 4+inv saves (marines only allowed one Iron Halo for instance) and the points cost is in line with most other armies, yet you hardly ever see anyone saying dont take the Inv for a marine commander etc. and Tau have the option to take multiple Inv saves yet its ignored.
The commander is your most valuable asset with his good BS, 4 Wounds, exc leadership and decent int so why would you not want to maximise his survivability, to me its common sense to take a shield gen.
ind staus will protect you from instand death from a shooting if you hide behind a squad. well its just luck with imperial guard ordanace weapons and hope that it scatters far far away. and in combat you can make an advantage out of it, by gathering your forces and getting in range with the enemy after they win the combat and shoot the crap out of them
Independant status will mostly protect you from getting shot at, but it will not save you from instant death. With only a T4 you get insta-killed on any shots over S8, so it's worth having the SG to make sure you get an inv save against anything better than AP3. Otherwise your multi-wound commander can go down pretty fast, since almost any opposing army is going to have at least a couple of shots with that profile. And any oppenent who knows the game is going to make it a priority to try and get that shot on your commander eventually, even if they have to slaughter a drone squadron first (which can also happen pretty fast).
