Recently I posted a thread noting that I'm a new player and need help with an army. After discussing my playing style, someone noted that Eldar or Dark Eldar would work with me best. Then I noticed that they are coming out with a new codex soon, so I decided I should run with it. What you should know in order to answer my question is that seeing as I am only in grade school and am not old enough to have a job, I am only bringing in around $20 a week. Right now I have about $40-60 and am wanting to know what I should do to begin playing Dark Eldar. Since my income is so small, I am required to work with the minor amount, and so I will buy the objects piece by piece, over time, This should help me buy a smaller army and collect components such as carrying case and codex, with an easy time. It will also help me learn the rules a lot faster, since I had quit playing after getting frustrated with them awhile ago. I could learn to play the team better, too. But let's get to the point, I need all of you to help me manage a small Dark Eldar army with codex and enough money to buy supplies in a few weeks (including the new codex when it arrives).
Thanks again for helping, and hopefully I will see everyone on the forums.
Ebay would be the best bet to buy things pretty cheap. But remember you have to be smart when you bid (check where they are, how much shipping, read everything etc etc etc....)
Ebay is a great way to build a huge army quickly. If you can, try to see if your parents can get you some things on Ebay. I started using it recently, and there a lots of options open (although I find there's a noticable lack of Hellions available.) But also make sure you check where the item is shipping from and the seller's rating (Yes, these ARE VERY IMPORTANT, so I'm telling you again). Also you or your parents may need a PayPal account, because most sellers only accept PayPal.
You can really save a LOT of money on ebay, I've seen entire armies on sale for around $70.00, which would get maybe like 3 squads of Warriors otherwise. Although my income is a bit bigger than yours, one buy on ebay can probably last you a few weeks worth of painting, so you can get your funds back up and focus on one squad at a time. Also most sellers are rather nice, so you can ask for some extra bits sometimes for conversions since you won't usually get a brand new box.
Just for reference, I got the 4th Edition Warhammer 40k rulebook for about $38.00, arrived the day after I ordered it, and the 6th Edition Warhammer rulebook for like $12.00 (plus $8.00 for shipping from Canada) and it arrived about a week later, so that shows how much you can actually save.
If that's not an option, try to buy stuff off people for cheap, someone on the forums said they got an entire army for like $10 from their friend, so see if that's possible too.
Hope that helps.
