After finishing with the Battle for Macragge box quests, I've decided to start out a Tyranid Army as I enjoy painting them and particularly like their "horde" mentality - the number of models that you can field is impressive indeed . After reading the number of tactica available on the board (credits to the authors of them, by the way), I'm now at a bit of a loss on what to outfit them with. So, apart from getting the codex, I was wondering what is one of the more effective ways of starting out with them, and what load-outs you guys would suggest.
At the moment I have 6 Genestealers and 10 Termagaunts, so I was wondering if it would be worth getting the Battleforce Box Set to fill out the ranks of my army, and then getting some more gaunts to go from there.
Howdy, welcome to Librarium Online. My first suggestion is to post in the intro thread in the Off Topic section and get to meet the mods and get an official welcome. My second suggestion is to get the Codex. We aren't allowed to post stuff straight from the Codex, so, you need it. Thirdly, the battle force is a good buy and worth it for a new 'Nid player. I would also suggest a Hive Tyrant or a Brood Lord, (both add some NASTY hitting power to your force). Anyway, welcome to the Hive and I'll see ya on the boards.

I started out with a boc of gunats and the battle force. this provides a decent amount of numbers for small games, as well some some synapse and big nasty units. i.e. Carnifex. it is also good value for money. as THE Hersh said, get either a tyrant or broodlord after some more troops. A tyrant is next on my to get list. Welcome to LO and i hope we can be of service to u in the near future.
Well come to the Hive
The first thing that you should get depends on how much money you want to spend. The battle box is a very good starter set but if it is too expensive, buy a box of gaunts and then later a warrior box. Even if you end up not liking gaunts they are a good thing to try, same with warriors. You allready have spore mines, gaunts, and stealers I guess or did you use some one elses Macragge? Anyway those will help you considerably and they were a great deal! You could even start by buying the warriors to get an HQ and you'll have a legal list. You can also deepstrike the spore mines now so you can play some good games. Good luck

i'm inclined to go for the hive tryant, because if u take a brood lord u have to take steallers as well, making it a more expencive unit. by taking a hive tryant u can make it cheap, but still effective, and have the option to take stealers as well. also, by taking another MC (the tryant) it means u're carni will survie a little longer. Remeber to read the tactica (if u haven't already) on equiping u're tyrant, it's generally a good idea not to mix the it's roles i.e. combat and shooting.
Hi and welcome. I'll tell you some things not to buy, not now anyway. Don't buy Lictors, Raveners, Gargoles or Biovores all these die easy and wont be of much use in battle until you get more playing experience. But getting the battleforce is defenatly a worth while investment, especially with a carnifex in it.

Don't listen to User about the Lictor, they pwn everything in certain games. However getting the masses of guys seems the way to go first. First ask yourself what the gaming scene looks like? Alot of IG or Armored Divisons? Make sure you get heavy then. I know with my Black Legion army, IG's mass amount of tanks bother me.
Hmm, the place I visit has players with Elder, Space Marine, Imperial Guard (Mostly troops) and the occasional Tau player coming through, if that helps. By the way (sorry for all the questions ^_^ ), with the loadouts for the MC's in a Tyranid army, is it better to have all of them close-combat (or Ranged) weapon equipped, or is it feasible to mix and match (For example, having one Winged Twin-Scything Talon Hive Tyrant and a Venom Cannon plus Barbed Strangler-Equipped Carniflex or vice versa) ?
As for the MC's, in my 2.500pts army i have a winged tryant equiped for combat, a ranged tyrant with guard, as well as 3 fexe's. 1 is combat (kept it nice and cheap i.e. 2 ST) 1 has 2 twin-linked devourers and the other will be equiped for tank hunting. It's fine that u mix the MC's for different roles, but DO NOT (unless u want to) mix the weapon biomoprhs on individual models. so have a sinlge MC for either CC or ranged. So in short, u can have differnet MC for different tasks, just don't mix a single MC's role.
