Welcome to Librarium Online!
I've always taken Warriors as CC because I figured it would be drastically cheaper than having them have weapons. They are a very picked on selection due to their synapse creature power. After a game where I felt like I needed more guns I did a little comparison...
My old CC squad:
4x Tyranid Warriors
Leaping, Scything Talons, Rending Claws, Extended Carapace, Adrenal Glands (I).
And now the new shooty squad:
4x Tyranid Warriors
Extended Carapace, Rending Claws, Barbed Strangler, Venom Cannon, Devourers (x2), Enhanced Senses, Toxin Sacs
I was amazed to realize that I can get the Shooty squad for 11 pts more. So now that begs the question... Shooty or CC.
I know it can be different for different opponents and missions and points values... but I'm finding that a Hive Tyrant and a Carnifex aren't enough fire support and that I could use the shooty warriors. I think that most of the time my warriors assault turn 3 after the hormagaunts and termagants have made it. Usually during that turn the Warriors get shot up. So why not have them firing back from Turn 1? If anything, my opponent will focus fire on them and take it away from the rushing gaunts.
Anyway, wanted to see how other people answered the shooty vs. cc Warriors.
Cant have a BS AND a VC in 1 squad.
Otherwise, I would run with 2-3 VC warriors and a wound sheild.
As of Tyranid 5th Ed. codex I have the Gaunts I wanted. I did, however, loose the sniperfexs I relied upon and they were more important then the gaunts.
I also found that my Hive Tyrant and Carnifex didn't add up to enough fire support. So for my 2 warriors units I put one into the CC basket and the other in the Shooty.
The shooty warriors are only upgraded with things that affect its shootyness, making this unit cheaper, and then being able to afford another unit or just beef up the one you have, thus making them a much more deadly a threat in shooting.
Going for both CC and shooty for one unit can become quite pricey and warriors are a bit soft and vulnerable to be both.
My CC Warriors have
Adrenal Glands +1 I and Ws,
Shooty Warriors have
Deathspitter / one with a Venom Cannon,
my shootly nids are:
1xTL Barbed Strangler
... maybe bioplasma if I want them in CC... but most of the time I don't
178pts w/o bioplasma, 190pts w bioplasma
this is the a la carte eldar/DE/IG/orks/Tau(non crisis suit models)...
Those players fear this brood and accually weeps when they see it... ok maybe not the weeping but still... you know what I mean. This brood will eat up poorly armoured troops like they wern't there.
Don't know how well this works against SM/Necron/Chaos though... but I like to kill them in CC instead of shooting.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will use your squad for playtesting... Maybe change out the barbed strangler when I know I need more tank defense and keep it when I'm against other swarms. Great advice and I'm kinda glad to have back some shooting troops.
Also I was reading about biovores more and have almost decided that they're not a waste... I'm thinking about how I could get them back into the army tactically to answer my need for more shooty stuff when playing the Imperium's armies.
I use both shooty and CC warriors:
Brood of 4
Enhanced sense + ext. carapace + Death spitter + scything talons
121pts for the brood, 31pts each
They are (relatively) cheap for what they can do. And they are not that bad in cc against non cc oriented infantry.
Brood of 5
Adrenal glands (Ini) + ext. carapace + Bio-plasma + leaping + rending claws + scything talons
205 pts for the brood, 41pts each
They cost a lot more, but are really effective. As you can see, they rely a lot on rending (no ws or S upgrades). Don't forget that, according to the current wording of the rules, the bio-plasma can rend...
guinea pigs are cutes
everybody loves guinea pigs ... right?
i tend to used cc warriors with scything talons rending claws wings and a few other biomorphs which i cant remeber right now as i dont have my lift infront of me
