    Why should I play orcs?

Greetings friends and fellow 40K players!

I've been playing 40K since 2nd edition, and ever since the begining I've played as Tyranids. The huge swarms of bugs rolling across the board has kept me playing through three editions now.

Thanks to the internet and a better job, I've started picking up new armies and trying out new things. I've played Tau (Too odd. What's with all the 5/5 Weapons?), Necrons (Space Skeletons! Oh noes!), Space Marines (I love that you guys call em Smurfs!), and Imperial Guard (Real men don't wear power armor!). All in all I've only enjoyed playing the guard even remotely as much as the 'nids. I won't touch the space elves so no worries there, but I've always enjoyed seeing the orcs and their huge armies.

So my question is, why should I play the Orcs? How much will I have to change my "Swarm" tactics to become a good Orc player? How much better/worse are they at killing the other armies?

    Thanks in advance!

I'll send you a larger responce later, but the basic things to keep in mind when playing orks are: 1) do you like conversions and 2) do you have a sense of humor?
Orks rely heavily upon distraction units (trukkaz, buggies, bikes, etc) to get their horde of footsloggers into melee (unless you play KoS), and make up for their occasionally poor stat-line (their BS and save) by the sheer number of shots they can put out a turn (how many armies out there can cart around three heavy bolters and fire them on the run?) and by KFF and grots. There's a definite interplay between your army choices that you have to keep in mind.
I say go for it. The Waaagh is an active ork community that is a great place to find some tacticas, and lord knows we can always use new ork players.

i agree. u need to have a great sense of humor when playing as orks, cuz anything can go wrong, but then its funny. also the orks have some of the crappiest vehicle models out there, so your gonna need to like converting. when it comes to the correlation btwn orks and nids' they are very similar. both are CC specialist armys and have swarms of guys. the biggest difference is their morale. where the nids' need to have synapse creatures nearby, the orks are immune to morale in big enough squads(EXTREMELY USEFUL) But most of all as the orks, you need to be enthusiastic, they are very fun to play as and need a certain brutality to play as effectively. I highly recomend the orks, they are the most fun ive had playing 40k and i wont go back!

    *Chuckles*

Well I enjoy conversions and I have a good sense of humor so I guess those are good things.

It'll also help not having to rely on brain bugs for my swarms.

The generic footslogging ork army is slow and durable, supported by some light vehicles.

In contrast to the generic tyranid army which has fast vicious bugs supported by monstrous critters.

The ork speed freak army has a lot less troops compared to the standard, but has much easier access to fast transports and other support vehicles.

Do you wis to play to gain victories or to have a great deal of fun win, lose or draw?

If you want many victories, and are of a competative, serious nature, Orks are probably not for you.

However, If you just want to have fun, be reckless and unpredictable, then The Orks are probably right up your street.

Orks are, in my opinion, an army that favour the player who just enjoys playing, painting and converting, and one who is not concerned with building up that win meter.

It certainly helps to have a sense of humour when playing Orks.

Well I don't compete so I guess that's another good point for the Orks. So it sounds like I'd enjoy Orks so the next question becomes, since I'm coming from the fast Bugs POV, should I focus on a Speed Freaks army or foot slogging?

Well if you're used to fast armies and like them, I guess Speed Freaks would suit you.

However, for a change, why not opt for something that offers you a completely new style and go for the foot-sloogers

personally im all footys, and i have fun with it even thou im Blasted to pieces b4 i get anywere, and its always important to have some buggies and bikes to keep the fire off your main force. In my expirience this works good agienst fire power armys (Guard, Tau, Eldar) who cant take 45 boyz pressing there lines. but if your coming from 'nids you would probably feel more comfortable with speed freaks, you'd hate the slow a moving army
