Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, so if it has please just direct me to the thread. I've been thinking of adding a couple or raveners to my army and was thinking what roles they could play. Personally, as I only want to take 2 atm, i'm not a big fan of deepstriking them as they are very vunerable to incoming fire. Although this does have the advantage of splitting then enemy's fire, but I think I'll keep that for the lictor.
The other way i thought of using them (probably in solo squads) is to use them as the equavialnt of beefed up vet. sergts for the hormie squads (2 squads of either 12 or 16). Of cousre they cannot join the squad, but just run (slither) along side it. I figure the majority of the time they will make it into combat at the same time as the hormies, the only thing differing is the FoC rolls. By supporting each hormie squad they add that little extra punch to the charge, that being rending attacks, making the unit combo much more effective against MEQ's. The other thing to do is let them off on their own, whether it is for tying up heavy shooty units of have a shot at taking out tanks. Their high leadership should keep them, from trouble if they're out of synapse. The only thing that i'm worried about is their save. by keeping them just behind the hormies, then the enemy is forced to take a priority check and he has to decide what he wants to shoot at. The added bonus of keeping it near the the Hormies is that they will most likely be in synapse range for most of the battle, saving from instantt-killing nastiness.
What are your thoughts on this tactic? Let me know what you guys do when them.
P.S. I haven't used any yet so all input is appreciated.
I know of only one role for raveners: point sinks. If you are going to take them then I think you are on the right track with taking one per squad and teaming them up with something else. This could offset their incredibly low survivability in a weird way... if the enemy doesn't shoot at them, well, fine, and if he does.. he will probably overkill them three times over, wasting a lot of fire that could have been used knocking something else down.Originally Posted by Marvus
I find raveners very good for taking an objectieve or attacking the flank of an enemy.
But personally I'm not of the opinion that their a point sink, they got a whole lot better with the new codex.
Personally, I find that a DSing Rav is like a Lictor, most opponents overrate them and overeact to them even before they show up.
A fav psychological warfare trick, I use two or three ravs and two lictors in most of my armies. Take 3 lictors and 6 ravs out of my carry case, place them beside the game table and smile nastily at my opponent. I have had opponents crapping their pants with this one. I actually had one guy cry foul that by taking them out and placing them beside the table I was declaring them in the game. Personally I love this trick.

That's a mean trick, gotta try that one.
Raverners are nasty in assault. 3 on the charge can have 15 rending attacks, at WS5 it's not that bad...

With 2 sets of ST they have a 6 attacks on the charge, for relatively little points cost. You can use them as support for your Hormagaunts, and they can take out a lot of troops. This would be great against less armoured units such as IG. Also, they can have rending claws which, as Marvus says, would be perfect to boost the combat potential of a Hormagaunt brood.

Personally, I like my ravs a bit, (okay, a lot), more expensive. I geve mine ST, RC and a dev. These guys are NASTY. I try to DS them into a safe spot, move em into a nasty spot for about a turn and then blast and charge. Many of my opponents have come to fear the DSing ravs.
EDIT - Hey, max. Wootage to the ultimo. I got my fourth star. Thanx to all who contributed, sniff, I'd like to thank my mother and the good Lord above and my manager, and my goldfish, for being there when things got rough and....ralph

I used to do that same trick with my Callidus Assassin.Originally Posted by THE Hersh
