As I have begun my new Tyranid army, and have been playing a few games, I still have some lingering questions requarding shooty warriors. It seems that most people outfit their warriors for CC, so how do these midsized bugs fare at shooting? I was considering the follwing unit for some of my smaller games.
3 Warriors (113): Enhanced Senses, Extended Carapce, Toxin Sacs, Scything Talons, 2 Deathspitters, 1 Barbed Strangler
Seems like a good shooty unit with the benefit of synapse. But when I start playing larger games (1500+), it seems devil fexes are a better option.
Carnifex (113): Enhanced Senses, 2 TL-Devourers
I guess my question can be summed up as, are shooty warriors worth their points, or are other organisms, like the devil fex, a better option?
"Dare to be Naive"
If someone helps you, or you just like what they say, rep them
If you want Warriors shooty, don't give them CC weapons...make the ones you can twin-linked.
Deathspitters aren't really worthwhile unless your opponent likes to pack his formations really tightly. Devourers will probably do much more damage, despite the lack of an AP and the lesser range.
Why do the survivors remain anonymous -- as if cursed -- while the dead are revered? Why do we cling to what we lose while we ignore what we still hold?
Name none of the fallen, for they stood in our place, and stand there still in each moment of our lives.

I really can't agree with that. All other armies recieve some form of points bonus for Twinlinked weapons - usually in the form of a reduced price (most typically 1.5X base weapon cost). Tyranids do not recieve this benefit - they're paying twice the points for something that with Enhanced Senses gives them only a 50% increase in effeciency. Not a wise investment of points.Originally Posted by Loestal
Secondly, if you plan on making a shooty squad of Warriors, give them Rending Claws rather than Scything Talons. It's slightly more expensive, but I promise you that six rending attacks a brood is more valuable than nine regular attacks. It really depends upon your army make up. The Warriors bring more attacks and more wounds to the table, but suffer every two wounds. The Carnifex brings a higher toughness and a better save, and doesn't suffer at all until he loses all four wounds.Originally Posted by thedrifter777
I think it really depends on what your basic troops are - one of the best reasons to take Warriors is due to Synapse. A Carnifex can't claim that.
I use my warriors for shooting and synapse, deathspitters and scything talons with a venom cannon thrown in for good measure. But like Caluin said, rending claws are far better.
I figure that since the warriors cant get Fleet of Claw and since I'm not willing to pay the points to make them flying, shooting is their best bet. They usually walk up the field in the middle of my army shooting at the enemy's light vehicles and heavy infantry, all the while providing synapse control, with big units of warriors (6 is usually good) it is hard for the enemy to destroy your synapse.
I was using a shooty brood for taking down light armour. In my experience they just don't pull their weight.
With my brood with EC, ES, Tox, VC & 2 DS. If I was hitting an AV 11 Rhino half the VC shot glance, 1/6 of the DS glance & 1/6 penetrate. So in a full 6 rounds of shooting you will get 3 VC glancing hits. The venom canon can only glance so half the time you only get crew stunned or shaken. The DS would do 1 glancing hit & 1 penetrating hit. I reality getting to take 6 rounds of shooting is highly unlikely.
Compare this to a Predator. Usually they have two heavy bolter sponsons. You take a twin linked lascanon shot & 6 HB shots. Thats about 4 hits & 3 wounds. Now quoting 3rd para from remove causualties rule "When a unit suffers as many wounding hits from the firing of a single enemy unit as it has models, the shooting player can nominate one model in the target unit that could be a casualty. This model must make a save..." Bye bye mister VC warrior.
Consider a Dakkafex (ES & 2 Dev) with 8 twin linked, reroll to wound, str 6 hits. It costs about the same & comes with 6 toughness & 3+ save.
Simply put shooty warriors just don't make the grade.
They are less effective in shooting when compared to an elite dual twin-linked devourer Carnifex. However, I would not say that they are useless, because they do pretty well in CC if equipped right. Give them a ranged weapon (devourer, deathspitter, or venom cannon), toxin sacs, flesh hooks, enhanced senses, and rending claws. You can buy three for around the same points as the Carnifex and they get nine attacks on the charge. They are also faster (the adrenal - initiative, is the only other upgrade I would even consider). Deathspitters are not bad at hurting light armor and do pretty well against open-topped vehicles, because of the vulnerability to blasts.
I have tried out twin-linked (devourers or deathspitters) warriors a few times. They get their butts whupped in melee combat. Good at mowing down troops, unless you are talking power armor, but rending claws just might be the best thing that ever happened to a mid-sized bug.
