    Only if he's walking.

Tyrant guard, at least a few of them, can help guarantee your tyrant isn't killed by turn 2. I add two of them to my shooty Tyrant. It practically guarantees at least three turns of shooting my BS/VC and if they can walk into CC they're a nice addition.

If its walking then they are essential to the sucsess and survival of your Tyrant, so that a big yes from me.

    Fourthed?

Yeah, walking + guard = living hive tyrant

I also never add them to a CC tyrant. Since a winged tyrant cannot have them you would have to walk to CC. This is never a good idea with Tyranids as walking 6" per turn will get you nowhere fast. I take a tyrant BS/VC combo for some Elite stomping shootiness and keep two guards near to get to fire them for a few turns.

I would say if you have a stripped down walker, like one with 2 twin linked devourers and +1BS and nothing else, then it probably makes sense to leave the guard out. They are expensive and do not hit that hard. But once the tyrant starts get get up to 130.. 140... definitely at 150 or 160 (like if you put a venom cannon on it) then one or two guard are a good idea for the soakage.

I would base it on how many points you are feilding.... I play a lot of 1850-2000 pt games so I have three guard with my walking tyrant. when the point total comes down I drop the guard down. As a general rule IMHO anything with rending in your army is a great thing against any foes.... adding guard is giving your tyrant 2 extra wounds per guard plus the extra attacks that come on turn 3-4 when they hit close combat. A tyrant with 10 wounds is worth the extra points. in smaller battles 750-1000 pts,I will run my tyrant without the guard due to points for guard = large brood of gaunts.
