Welcome to Librarium Online!
I will be soon playing a friendly 1500pt match - my Nids vs Dark Eldar. Being a n00b, all I know about the DE is what I've picked up from the GW website: they're fast, they hit hard, and they're only lightly armoured. It should prove a nice change from my usual SM diet.
Can anyone advise me on DE vs Nid tactics they've experienced? DE troop types to fear? Good Nids to counter DE strengths (or exploit their wekanesses)?
My army is still undecided, but in its vanilla way will include two full broods of genestealers, some gaunts and hormagaunts, possibly ripper swarms, a gunfex (BS+VC), either zoanthropes or raveners, warriors (up to 2 broods, either/or both shooty and CC) and either a broodlord + retinue or a walking dakka tyrant + guards. I also have a noob-uber CC 'fex if it would help.
I'd leave the stealers at home, the only things they're good for are his HQ with Retinue.. powerarmoured nasties.
You'll need lots of venom cannons to take down his (thank god) opentopped vehicles, of which there will be plenty. Hormagaunts are ok'ish, they're speed makes them good, but the fact that basic DE warriors have higher I makes them bad.
I'd take lots of warriors and gun beasts, coupled with.. fast things, raveners, gargoyles, flying warriors and tyrant and then hormagaunts en masse.
Most DE armies fly around in their cheap and fragile skimmers and shoot you to pieces, all the while avoiding you in CC, which is bad news when you're a bug.
So shoot their Raiders and Ravagers down, pay special attention to the ravagers as then can lay down a serious amount of templates.
I've never actually seen a Talos (a dreadnoughish thing), could be trouble, so there might be some work for your stealers... if you can avoid the Wychs, one of the few units who can wipe the floor with stealers in CC.
Open-topped vehicles, yum. Venom cannon can penetrate, and if you hit with the strangler, it counts as 2 hits because of Vulnerable to Blasts. Much fun indeed.
youll need numbers. if there like the elder, NUMBERS. Get VC's, its the best nids can offer for range(agaisnt vechiles) also warp blast can help....if you can hit....
otherwise i havent fought them but hope u kick butt, or eat them?
Genestealers with Extended Carapace actually happen to do fairly well against Dark Eldar. The simple reason is that DE have only one multi-shot weapon with AP4 or better.
Only a third of Splinter Rifle shots will wound a Genestealer and only half of those will pass through armour. Factoring in ballistic skill, it takes nine shots, on average, to kill one Genestealer. Splinter Cannons fare somewhat better at 6 shots per kill. That leaves DE heavy weapons, such as Dark Lances and Disintegrators. The latter might be a bit more worrisome, especially if your formations are tight or if it uses its Sustained Fire mode. Fortunately, that fire-mode only has a 24" range and the weapon only appears on vehicles -- and DE vehicles drop like flies to Venom Cannons. Anyway, if he's shooting Dark Lances and Disintegrators at your Genestealers, he's disregarding your bigger units.
In close combat, Genestealers can be a pain for DE to kill. Wyches can stand against them on equal terms, depending on the drugs they get (+1 to Attack or Always Strike First produce the best results), but most other units will have problems. I once managed to rout two squads of DE Warriors with two Genestealers that managed to get into combat. The Warriors simply couldn't kill the things!
Why do the survivors remain anonymous -- as if cursed -- while the dead are revered? Why do we cling to what we lose while we ignore what we still hold?
Name none of the fallen, for they stood in our place, and stand there still in each moment of our lives.

A recent battle report with 1500 points of Tyranids vs Dark Eldar:
http://www.librarium-online.com/foru...ad.php?t=50743 (Tyranids vs. Dark Eldar, 1500 points)
Genestealers are not useless, since they are faster than most DE in melee. I just think they are less useful than against power armor.
Barbed stranglers are just great, as are devourers.
My opponent's army needed serious tweaking, but the batrep should give you some ideas of what did what. If your opponent takes Ravagers, they are nasty with a darklance and 2 disentigrators.

That's a beautiful battle report! I liked the fluff bits and the description of the DE leader type cutting his own arm off especially.
I snuck a 5 min. look at the DE codex in the local games store...
For relevelling CC against things like wyches and the HQ types, I was thinking about putting Catalyst on my Tyrant and adding a Lictor to my line of troops for the feeding tendrils.
Taloses and ravagers look nasty indeed! I'm leaning towards zoanthropes now for their more reliable (than raveners) anti-vehicle role. Or I might ease up on the genestealers and save some points for both zoanthropes and raveners.
All good thoughts, thanx.
For vehicle killing against DE (for a change) you should forget the zoanthropes and stick to venom cannons and barbed stranglers, for two reasons. First, the most armor DE can get is 11 which eliminates most of the advantage of the zoanthrope (ability to bust through AV 13+ without rolling really high). Second, they are all open-topped skimmers which eliminates the disadvantage of the venom cannon and makes anything with a template (like a barbed strangler) get two damage rolls. I pretty much shudder to think what a classic VC/BS fex would do to them.Originally Posted by andrewthotep
Acid mines and poison mines are also worth thinking about, for a change. And really even anti-vehicle warriors could be taken seriously for DE.. one venom cannon per squad and deathspitters on the other guys, with +1S if you are feeling daffy.
I would also say leave the genestealers and raveners at home, as rending claws are next to useless against DE and they tend to have lots and lots and lots of little S3 and S4 shots that will really ruin your day unless they are hitting something dirt cheap like gaunts.
The talos is the only thing in the list that the rending claws would really be handy for. But a tyrant with implant attack and acid maw would tear it to shreds, and so would a carnifex. When I played against my buddy's DE I just swamped it with gaunts until I could get around to killing it.. It will only kill two or three per turn, and if they are 5 pt. spinegaunts that is nothing.
simply put. Blow **** up! Destroy the transports, and us BS to take out CC troops. now i think about it keep shooting the **** out of everything, you can out shoot DEs.:ninja:
Well, the DE player couldn't make it so I ended up playing a 1500pt match vs Iron Warriors. Sigh. It was, however, the debut match for my broodlord + retinue and gunfex, and both performed exceedingly well (a squad of chaos terminators without a genestealer lost, and six marines in a single BS blast...). The Iron Warriors surrendered in turn 4.
I also think I know where everybody's luck with zoanthropes is going - to me. Mine hit on every shot and blasted multiple CSMs every time.
Ostsol, the psychic scream thing looks well worth pursuing with lower-Ld opponents. Had I played the DE I would have equipped 2 'thropes and my Tyrant with the screams, just to rub it in. :-)
I'd like to thank everyone for their advice anyway.
