Is it just me or have us Tau players been slightly left in the dark as far as unit choice goes? Sure Tau units kick ass (least shooting wise) but come on... Troops... Fire Warriors or Kroot... geez . Reminds me of the Necrons when they first appeared in the previous edition of Wh40k.
BTW, I'm new, be gentle
Yes, the choice of unit is rather poor. Even sadder is that some units
(krootox, hounds) shouldnt even be choices on the organisation chart, they should be an option for the kroot carnivores.
Look around here and you will find plenty of ideas for new units, well if Tau get more and more popular surely will GW add more choices.
I agree on the lack of choices. As to the Kroot in general, I have not bought one fig of them. I just don’t like them.
I hope to see some more options. There are a lot of ideas floating around the forums so hopefully GW will read some and get the hint and bring about some more options.
I gathered up an 1500 point army with 9 crisis suits, 2 FW squads a drone squad and 3 Broadsides. Now that I have them assembled it is time to paint. Man the way I paint it will take till sprin till I will be playing.
I hope to see a few more options on my way to 3000 points.
::starts chanting more choices:: I then us tau plyers shoud gathe up pitchforks and flaming torces and go the the gw headquaters and demand more choices, i mean look at the eldar like f***ing 5 choices per slot.

as far as choice goes i'm making an "assault" devilfish with the VDR for my pathfinders
the plan is to put the standard burst cannon on the front, nick the two side ones from a hammerhead and then put a twin linked pintel mounted one where the commanders hatch is. that combined with the carbines and rail rifles should make for a nasty little unit
on the subject of troop choice its hard to change anything, i like having my fw's with only two types of gun (the carbines normally stay at home anyway) as it keeps it simple and means that i know exactly what each unit is doing on the battlefield. of course it helps that i always take at least one squad of drones which behave like fw's with jump packs
the only troop choice changes i'd like to see would be rail rifles and non-forgeworld models for the heavy and markerlight gun drones (how are poor students meant to afford the sexy drones?)
less hate more kittens

But i'll say GIVE US SOME MORE CHOICE ABOUT ANYTHING!!!!
I mean almost ALL Tau forces look the same ( not paint but models )!!!
I don't think they all look too similar, they just stick with an army theme. Not much different from SMs or many other, (read: not all, some have a very eclectic set of models), armies.
Anyway, in addition to what everybody else has said...
It's also a problem how limited the functionality of some units are.
Pathfinders, even if you think they're worth their price, including the devilfish, are only useful in certain situations where you need the marking. They're definetely too expensive to be fielded as pulse carbine shock troops.
Kroot are themselves of limited use without forests. (it's one thing for the IG to have forest troopers, since they can field other similar troops without the forest upgrades if need be) The Tau only have one unit like the kroot, and if left in the open then the kroot probably aren't worth their cost.
The krootox, if functional at all, is also only useful in rare circumstances where you have good cover for your kroot, (they are too fragile to use as shooters without giving em cover, imho), and you want them to be a fire base. Moving the krootox at all makes it worthless.
Kroot hounds are great, but as mentioned only useable with kroot carnivores, and then they can only be purchased in incredibly small packs. The end resulst is that you have to take up all of your fast attack slots if you wanna field just 1 max Carnivore squad+max hounds.
The inability to mount dual weapons on a crisis is also an annoyance to me.
What if I don't want to t/l? (maybe I wanna depend on markerlights instead, for example), What if I just want twice the firepower?
I think it's pretty stupid that I have to field two different weapons if I wanna dual shoot at all. (though some of the weapons, like the plasma rifle and the fusion cannon, do compliment each other well I'll admit, on the whole they do not. Different ranges for each makes any and all dual weapon arrangements a source of frustration).
There is alot to complain about when it comes to options, but... the necrons and the dark eldar have limited choices too, so it's not just the Tau.
i must disagree with your thoughts on pathfinders-
fielding them with three railrifles makes them into a pretty kick ass team, use markerlights to pick targets for the rail rifle models to shoot up- plus i usually have at least 1 broadside able to take potshots at anything my pathfinders can see.
I tend to use them as if they were a heavy weapons squad, i only put them ahead of my main force if terrain or some other influence makes it a good move.
Haemonculus Coven Dark Eldar
What do you do with the 80 pt devilfish you wasted your dinero on?
I use it as a burst cannon and 2 pulse carbines (for the pinning test) that roams around the field. I also have been known to use it as cover for other units.
its also good at drwing heavy weapons fire, as it looks almost identical to the "scary" hammerhead.
