Hi,
I'm at last in the money, and intending to blow it all on 'nids. Well, specifically I intend to buy a Hive Tyrant. The problem is of course, what to arm it with.

Do I choose to go all out assaulty, or play a more versatile creature? Or is there a kind of mixture of the two I could get away with? Below 170pts is preferable, but it isn't such a big problem.

The Assaulty Tyrant would go thus:

Assaulty Tyrant
-Front of Codex Upgrades (90pts) (ie maxed out)
-Winged (40pts)
-2 x Scything Talons (16pts)
-Extended Carapace (15pts)
-Implant attack (8pts)
-Warp Blast (25pts) - optional extra
Total of 169 points (not including warp blast)

If I wanted it to be almost ungodly, I could add Bio-plasma for a 6th CC attack, but it probably isn't worth the points. Or, I could give it six strength 5 shots with the Devourer, but that would be relinquishing a CC attack. That would probably be better with a Carnifex.

The assaulty Tyrant would be a monstrously evil creature in CC, but what if I got stuck with a shooty army and a ridiculously big table? It's also a heck of a lot of points to die with one unit, and any sane enemy would target it first.

So a more versatile Tyrant would be:

Versatile Tyrant
-Front of Codex Upgrades (90pts)
-1 x Scything Talons (8pts)
-Extended Carapace (15pts)
-Venom Cannon (45pts)
-Warp Blast (25pts) - optional extra
Total of 158 points (not including warp blast)

That'd be a lot more versatile, in that it can exchange fire at long range as well as stomp around killing things up close, but it's slow and wouldn't be so brilliant in CC. It would have a lot tougher time even getting there.

At the moment I'm fielding a roughly 750 pt army, but in the near future I intend to add a 'fex, and a Lictor (and maybe a Ravener, we'll have to see) to the mix to build it up to 1000. If I choose a more versatile Tyrant though, I'll probably be needing to get some Tyrant Guard instead of the Lictor, to cover it while it trudges about.

Btw, if anyone wanted to know, the current army consists of:

HQ
3 x Warriors (a VC, a Deathspitter, a RC and with Scything talons on all)

Troops
16 x Spinegaunts
16 x Hormagaunts
6 x Genestealers
6 x Genestealers

Fast Attack
3 x Leaping Rippers

Heavy Support
1 x Zoanthrope

Subject to change of course.

I like my VC Tyrant, but they do work best with Guard. If you are going to save $$$ then stick with the flying Tyrant. You may want to upgrade his armor though.

Perhaps going for the VC Carnifex to act like your Tyrants, and then the Winged Tyrant to save cash (and painting time -I spent days on that Zoanthrope, and doing two identical Guards would drive me up the wall&#33

If he truly is going to be an assault tyrant then drop the Warp Blast and give him the bio plasma attack. IMO with wings you are only going to have the opportunity to get one shot off with that warp blast and then you'll be in close combat.

If having the warp blast is that critical then spend another 34 points and go with another Zoanthrope, you'll get the ability to attack seperately, 2 wounds and just as good of a save for that 34 points. i think that is pretty good.

take that, and the bio-plasma, if you only got one tyrant, make him the best he can be. more points? who cares? he is a god.

mine is identical to that. a bloodthirster assaulted him and died in one turn. that is beastly. the same game, he killed a daemon prince. he lost one wound to a beserker the entire game.

use warp blast ONLY if up against space marines.

on a side note:
ouch. i just saw JFK assasinated. nasty. Unite! doubt! the government is lying about the JFK assasination! do some research, Lee Harvey Oswald did not kill JFK.

The nice thing about Warp Blast is that you don't have to model it, so I can just go with the bio-plasma and if I ever get 25 pts to spare stick the blast in for good measure. As a strength 10 AP1 shot, even if is fired only once it would still be useful on occasion.

Excellent, thanks everyone for that advice. Time to get modelling, methinks
