Welcome to Librarium Online!
Even though I have finally won my first match in 40K, I am still losing alot. Maybe the first was just a fluke, or the stars aligning just right, who knows. My point is, I am having a huge dilema when I battle against my friends. I mostly see MEQ armies(Sisters, necrons) and even some eldar and tau once in awhile. I honestly dont think that my army list has holes in it(maybe it does), but I know my tactics arent that great. That is where I need some help an advice in.
Just some specifics: I play on a ruined city board(not city fight) that has alot of broken terrain in it. Not many good places to field large squads that need to move as they bottle neck very easily. Also with alot of terrain, it causes me to roll alot of difficult terrain checks. Yes I know that Nids get 3d6 but it still causes alot of problems as Most of the time I will not be getting my full 6 inch move. It also provides alot of cover, both for me, but mostly for his shooty armies that like to hide in one spot til I get them out.
Most of the armies have 3+ saves. Again a major problem to nids unless they are in CC. Let me know what I can do with this.
Well I don't know exactly how your bord is setuped, but it seem that it does not let much space to walk on normal terrain. And we don't know what you have in your army ?
If your opponent like to stick in cover in a spot, the best way is probably to make him go out of it or to occupy his guys until your army get into cc with them. I think that a winged tyrand with scything talons, warp field and whatever you want in addition can be able to do some real big damage.
Did you also try an infiltrating broodlord ? it should be wonderful in this kind of board, no?
May be some gargoyle will be able to tile the enemy rapidly and give you an extra turn too.
Genstealer squad tends to be smaller than the others choice we have, so it could be more easier manageable in this terrain ? Scuttlers can be your friend too!
Rather be careful with the deep strike since you use a lot of terrain piece it could be deadly for your units.
Tyranid 2500 pts
Space marine 750 pts
since your fielding a lot of scenery take a broodlord and some lictors, to tackle the marines take a couple of zoanthropes, they are very good at busting SM
Normally I like to play 1500 because at the moment thats what I can field easily. 1850 to 2000 is the preferred though. I havent used a Broodlord yet so I cant comment on it. I use my Genestealers in small groups(usually 6) and they have EC and Scuttling. I also have a winged Tyrant that i was only able to use once so far so I will have to see how that goes.
Are there rules on terrain that maybe I am not knowing? Is there a limit? What are the rules for shooting out from things like burned out buildings or something? My opponent tends to hide in these and use windows to look out of. Are there any rules that cover this?
I also used two biovored this past encounter with bioacid and they proved actually quite useful. Since he bunched up alot of his force, I just dropped the mine in. Generally it got between 5 and 9 hits. No armor save since its AP 3.
I know Nids should field large groups to overwhelm, but its hard in this circumstance. Should I try instead lots of smaller groups?
I dont know how your army is structured, but an "elite" tyranid army wouldsuit such a board well.
A Broodlord and a flying tyrant for HQ.
Some lictors for elite, possibly some CC warriors too.
Genestealers and... more genestealers for troops.
Raveners for fast, although you might want to walk them to their target instead of deepstriking them.
I'd go for Zoanthropes, as has been said above, they're excellent at marine busting, and since an army like this doesnt have to worry about synapse, Catalyst or Psychic scream might be worth trying out.
Generally I'd give everything flesh hooks, as you'll be assaulting into cover a lot.
If your army doesnt fit the above, which I'm guessing it doesnt, please post a quick list. Its much easier to give tactical advice if we know what units you have available.
I am creating a list as we write. It will be up shortly. I am seriously looking into the flesh hooks thing, especially since they are only 1 p apiece for fexes. As far as the Genestealers. There is a serious anti-Genestealer discrimination at the board I play. They are targetted more than anything else on my list. Im not if taking huge amounts of these would be a good idea
Most opponents will target genestealers, especially MEQ armies. If you bring enough squads, say 4-5 each numbering 8-12 stealers, he cant target them "more than anything else".
