Hey. I was just wondering, how feasible is a TRUE mech tau army i.e. just tanks and minimum FWs? Would this army get pwned?
I ask because I read the mech tau article but it implies that suits and drones, etc are included too and I'd prefer a simply tank based army. Any help apreciated
Without a good amount of infantry your tanks will become quite vulnerable as there will be few targets for enemy guns on the battlefield.
I have fought a pure MechTau like you suggest. Although in fairness I do believe that suits (non broadside) are also Mech.
He played this army vs. my USF army and got me pretty good. The key to it is set up. If he/she can get the troops deployed and in the right spots it is a very hard army to advance on.
It's possible... but I don't see it being very succesful, even with an excellent general. I personally enjoy my somewhat-hybrid mech army. I prefer the Hammerheads to go Infantry Hunting, so my Broadsides (IC BIN MT!) are my main tank hunters, and Kroot Infiltrating up front make a lovely distraction.
In smaller games (i.e. 1500 and less) it's feasible; the enemy most likely won't have enough anti-tank to take our your vehicles, and you could have a fair amount of firepower.Originally Posted by impending slaughter
However, once you start getting bigger, two huge factors come in;
1) Vulnerability. The enemy has more and more anti-tank weapons and can quite easily target your most devestating tanks (Hammerheads).
2) Lack of firepower. Three Hammerheads, in a small game, can dish out the hurt reasonably well (though still probably not as well as other armies). In a larger game, they won't be able to dish out the pain that is needed to take out the enemy's army effectively.
With minimum FireWarriors, and not using Suits, it'll be a very "generic" army (only two different things in the army, really; Firewarriors/Devilfish and Hammerheads) and won't be able to fight very well on it's own without some sort of supporting unit.
The only time I've ever done this is in a 600pt game, I took 2 fish with fw's, ethereal, and hammerhead. It was a win, but I can't say that it is a good tactic in higher point games, there's a lot more anti-tank around, and dropping fire warriors out of a fish doesn't do a lot of damage to marines.
What he said. But if you keep your tanks moving then you'll reduce the risk death when they shoot at you.Originally Posted by Dreachon

Acctually I have a list like you say and it hasnt lost a game. All my fire warriors are in tanks I have one suit(my shas'o) three broadsides some piranahs and some tetras.
He wanted tanks.. and Fire Warriors. That's all. Not Broadsides/Suits/Pirahnas/Tetras.Originally Posted by XMikeX
At low point costs, it wouldn't do too badly; however, in larger games, it won't be able to dish out enough firepower to really be effective. As I said above.
