Welcome to Librarium Online!
My friend and I are getting into 40K. Niether of us has any experience. Hes set on Necron. They're cool and I'm looking forward to playing against him/them. I wish I was as decisive. At first I was going to go with Chaos Marines but they have lots of special rules and they seem a bit complicated to start fresh into 40K with. I can't decide on a faction now, the space marines seem simple, the orcs look cool but I'm not sure...read somewhere on this forum that thier battleforce set was wonky. We're looking at 500 pt battles to start with. Who/what would you(s) recommend for someone starting out as in this game playing against someone else starting out this game with the Necron Battleforce boxset.
I dont want to pick an army and then come to find out that "Oh you dont have any chance with a 500pt *variable* army against necrons." I should mention that he's much better at strategy games than myself. hahaha
Now, don't take this the wrong way, but winning isn't the only thing about this game, theres also the fun to be had during games (chit chat and such) along with painting, modeling and the like, so don't think it's all about winning!
As far as the army choise, HOW do you want to play? Numbers? Mobility? Tactics?
Well, tactics is probably out...like I said, I'm not much of a strategist. I'm leaning toward Orks or the old stand by Space Marines. Wouldn't be totally against Tyranids.
Its not about winning, just a bit intimidated by the whole monolith/regenerating units thing. Hehe.
Yeah...that sounds like my kinda strategy. Thanks.
Just a thought, make sure your freind know about phase out when you play him because that is the best way to beat necrons, and i think that they can only be beaten that way.
as for selection of army, I think you need to decide wether you want to shoot him inot swiss cheese or to slice him up good. After that decision you can choose specific factions. That would be my suggested aproah
Ok, welcome to 40k, hope you enjoy it.
The game is not about winning, and tayloring your army to counter another army is cheesy. Just remember u wont be fighting just necrons.What you should do is look at each army and choose off which one suits your tactical ideology. i'll help you out....
Very popular army, with each book being very different from another. They are very evil, heavily armoured and tough, suited mainly for close combat but are an all rounder army. But some variations are different such as the iron warriors. The strengthsof chaos is their high toughness, heavy armour, and ability to deal with any threat. Their main weakness' is their high points cost, meaning you will not be fielding as many models.
Daemonhunters are meant to fight chaos, most things in their army is set to kill daemons, but daemonhunters are very good in close combat. Their basic troop, the grey knight, has the best stats in the game and is vicious in cc as well as bing able to dish out a lot of firepower. all of this is combined into the same high armour and toughness of other "marines" Strengths is the grey knights and the ability to ally other armies into them. Weakness' is the extremely high points cost of grey knights and grey knight termies, and their lack of ranged Anti-Tank support. But the AT problem can be solved by wisely chosen heavy supports.
The MOST evil army in the game. They are also the most mobile army in the game, and will run rings around your opponents (especially crons) But they are somewhat challenging to use, as they have low armour saves and low toughness. Strengths is their numbers, meaning you can outnumber most opponents and their speed. Their biggest strength is the incubi, in my eyes the best close combat unit in the game. Incubi tear through anything in close combat. Weakness' is that you will take large casualties as your troops are weakly armoured, but thats ok because you have numbers.
The good cousins of the dark eldar. Same basic strategy, it is a speed army, but with more choices. Eldar make extensive use of psychic powers. Strengths is their mobility and their specialised troops called aspect warriors. Weakness' is primarily low toughness. But they are rather complicated and not the best army for starters.
Ah, my first army and my favorite, the IG is very fluffy, using loads of lowly humans called guardsmen and tons of tanks. IG can outshoot any other army and can field overwhelmingly large numbers of models. Strengths is the huge number of troops, (points wise three guardsmen = 1 necron warrior) and the grip of large tanks with weaponry called ordnance, huge weapons capable of knocking out 5 or 6 of the heaviliest armoured troops with ease. Weakness' is that they are not meant for close combat.
Have same toughness and armour of "marines" but can get back up after they are dead thanks to their "we'll be back" roll. any gun of theirs' can take out any tank, and they have powerfull fast moving units such as destroyers. Strengths: We'll be back, AT weaponry, and high strength and toughness. Weakness: Not very good in assault, High points cost
Pure close combat army, excellent at killing anything with heavy armour like necrons and marines thanks to choppas, which negate their heavy armour. They are tough but wear no armour so u need lots of troops to win the day, but they are cheap. Orks also have the lowest accuracy in the game, so dont even THINK about trying to shoot something... just keep charging forward.
A favorite army for starters, simple army that is an all rounder like chaos. Basically the same as chaos game wise but more oriented for shooting. another "all-rounder army"
Worst close combat army in the game, but very good at shooting. They have high strength, longe range weapons but will NEVER win in close combat. period.
Swarm them! Tyranids are very fast and brutal in close combat. They put necron weapons to worthless as they have no tanks. They are similar to orks as they are a close combat army but they can shoot things up quite well. They use powerfull big creatures and swarms of lightly armoured but cheap one's called Gaunts.
a largely female force, they have the same low toughness as humans but have the armour and accuracy of a space marine. They have good cc units as elites, but lack longe ranged firepower. Very few play witch hunters so it is quite a rare force.
CHAOS = All rounder, leaning towards close combat.
DAEMONHUNTERS = All rounder, but use small numbers of troops and need 2 get into cc.
DARK ELDAR = Speed army, with good shooting and assaulting
ELDAR = Speed Army, with good shooting and assauling
IMPERIAL GUARD = SHOOTING/HORDE army
NECRONS = SHOOTING/RESILIENT army
ORKS = Close Combat only.
SPACE MARINES = All rounder, leaning towards shooting
TAU = Shooting Only
TYRANIDS = Close Combat but capable of some shooting
WITCH HUNTERS = Shooting with some close combat
Well, hope this helps. IM me if u have any questions. I would recomend after picking an army visit its page on here and get help from the specialists.
Also, IM me again if you want anti-necron tactica for your army. I played necrons for quite some time and am still selling all my old stuff.
As for me now, I play Imperial Guard, Witch Hunters, and Space Marines
However, if you REALLY want to know my opinion on the top 3 best anti necron armies, i would say
1st: Dark Eldar: Necrons are slow, DE can clos ein quickly and incubi will ruin him completely. Trust me, ive seen incubi single handedly take out 15+ necrons in assault in 1 turn! They also have low AP weapons, meaning they can ignore the necron heavy armour.
2nd: Orks: Slugga boys rip necron warriors up. Anything with a choppa is thumbs up agains necrons.
3rd: Tyranids: Once again, close combat is the way to go and your opponent will have a hard time shooting everything be4 he gets assaulted
Wow thats awesome. All the descriptions of the factions I've found, even in the codexes say how each one is "One the the most powerful" and dont really help when trying to pick one. THis is exaclty the kind of feedback I needed. I dont want to wipe the floor with my friend, haha, just put up a good fight. I'm going to stay away from the eldar, dark or otherwise. I just ordered my first orc. Thanks.

Just a few tips...
I dont know if i would go with the ork battleforce. their bikes arent all that great. definetly consult the people at the ork page.
Also, when you get ork codex u will see there is NO WEAPONS SUMMARY :tongue: there's no part in the codex which has the stats for your guns (not that orks shoot much anyways) go to this link and download the ork faq, that will have your weapon stats.
Have fun, start a good WAGGHHH!
I have to agree that da Orks are a very fun army to play and play against. They are devastating in close combat, and despite what gen.nehring Orks can be very shooty, they just aren't especially good at it. But that is what makes them so much fun! You generally get a whole fist full of dice to roll, and every once in a while you surprise everyone and score lots of hits! They do well especially against Necrons as their choppas make short work of our normally 3+ saves. That, and they fight in numbers and with enough attacks...well it makes me lose sleep just to think of it.
In short, Orks are a great choice, and are guaranteed to give you hours of enjoyment! I hope you continue to post and let us know how games go, and if you have any questions.
