Okay, just to get it out of the way, no this isn't horribly fluffy. Many of my games end to be three player and one of those three tend to be Necrons. So fluffy or not, I find myself allying with them.
In the past I've simply tried to put together a reasonably solid list of my own and try to function all on my lonesome. This is, of course, not the best way to do things. Both times the Necron player phased out right when I was finally ready to start bringing on the hurt. Bit of a caught with my pants down situation.
It seems like the two places that Space Marines may have an advantage over Necrons are in long range, low AP weapons and in close combat.
So, if you were marching up the field in your tin-can endoskeletons, what would you want to see out of some friends in tin-can exoskeletons? I'm thinking of having at least one CC unit staying with his warriors to keep them out of CC. Beyond that I'm not certain what I'll use. Devastator Squads and Librarians aren't options for me, although if they're good support feel free to mention it in case anyone else is curious about this same question.
Thanks for your input.
Can you tell us your friends basic list?
Well for starters, keep a squad of marines (dont equip with heavy weapons, and not flamers, dont wanna hurt your teamates) intermingled within some of his warrior squads. So if he does get charged your guys are right there with a sergeant, with power fist/weapon to help the close combat out.
Or if you do want to risk that get fast moving squads to tie up anything harmful to your teamate so he can help with your weaknesses.
What are some of your opponents that you play?
I've only seen him playing 1000 or 1500 point lists so far. He takes 2 squads of 10 Warriors, a Lord with Res Orb and VoD, and some scarabs at 1000 points. At 1500 he bulks up the Warriors (I think), adds in some destroyers, and usually adds in a Monolith. Not sure if the Monolith is the best thing in the world, but hey, he likes it and it's his list. I'm not going to give him crap over it in a friendly game.
When I'm teamed with him we usually are either facing Orks, vanilla Space Marines, or Alaitoc Eldar. So far both games I've played there've been Alaitoc on the board, and they tend to do a fairly good number on his Warriors before they can get close enough to do anything. One thing I'm going to start being a bit more insistant on is dropping more terrain on the table as we tend to run a little light.
Definitely some combat stuff to allow him to focus on taking destroyers etc.
Countercharge units, as well, for defense.
