Welcome to Librarium Online!
I was just wondering if someone could tell me about the possibility of an all genestealer army.
Is it possible?
How many models would it be comprised of?
Is it a good idea?
A 1500 pt list would have ~60-70 stealers and a broodlord. More or less depending on what biomorphs you give them.
I saw someone use it and win in a local tournament. Very boring list, game wasn't fun to watch at all. List scored him 0 for composition and he didn't leave with any new friends.
But try it out if you are curious.
It certainly is possible. Your HQ would comprise of a Broodlord with retinue of atleast 5 stealers, and the rest of the army will be stealer broods taken as troops (if it's pure stealers). Of course, depending on your tastes, you can add other units, but that's up to you.
Of course numbers depends on how many points is being played. Most recomendations from the majority of nid players here at LO, would to equip every stealer with extended carapace, making each model worth 20pts. Other upgrades are up to you, but i would recommend posting an army list in the tryanid army list section, as well as proxy models and playtestnig before you do mots of your buying and gluing, just to save you pain later on.
As for the last question it really is personal. If you want a stealer army go for it, there is nothing stopping you. If you're wanting to know if it's a good starters army i can't help you there as i wouldn't know. They are defenityely powerful, no doubt about that, but for nids, they are expensive points wise for each model, so loosing each one will hurt. I would like to hear form an all stealer player just to hear how easy they are to control on the battle field. A benfit of al stealers is thta you do not need any synapse, although synapses bonus are helpful to an extent for stealers.
Anyway, choose want to want to do and somehting that you're willing to stick with, even if you do not succed at first. Happy hunting.
I have actually used a NEARLY all genestealer army against my friend that plays Khorne and pretty regularly wins overwhelmingly against my other armies. Well, those genestealers did a real number on him. The stealers tore his entire army to shreds, hands down. Sure, I lost a few stealers, but nothing compared to what they accomplished. It was a 3000 point game, and I had 6 units of 10 stealers, plus a broodlord with 5 stealer retinue. I can't remember what he had, but by the time he called the game over he had a Land Raider and like 3 marines left. I had one unit of stealers that hadn't even been in contact yet and loads of stealers still on the board, PLUS 2 carnifex's and a unit of 7 warriors that hadn't done anything yet. It was a massacre, pure and simple. I enjoyed the game, but it wouldn't be much fun to play all the time, that is for certain. I would suggest having enough to pull it off once in a while if you want to, but not as your main army. Keep things interesting and mix it up, for your sake and theirs.
An all stealer army will have big difficulties against armor heavy lists, or those with lots of ap4 firepower. LSTs, Baal pred's, chimeras, lemun russ exec's, etc. will tear them apart. Ordnance weapons will also hurt big time.
Stealer-based lists, though, can be great. I play one where all my troops are stealers supported by shooty big bugs, and it's worked great. I play 2000 points, typically, and field 48 stealers w/EC with 3 heavy support fex w/VC+BS, 1 elite fex w/2 TL-Devs, 2 tyrants (one flying) w/2 TL-devs, and a lictor. It's done very well against all comers.
Without the numbers of a typical tyranid army, what I typically do is deploy virtually all my stealers on one side of the deployment zone and crush a flank, then just sweep across the board. The strength of the army is that typically an opponent has to choose between trying to kill the stealers or the big bugs... at which point, the ones they ignore will wreak havoc on them. With the speed of the stealers (especially if scuttling), they will only have 2 turns max to do it, too, before I'm in their lines.
I've created a new list dropping 2 stealers and the elite fex to give all 46 others scuttle. I played one game with it and it worked well, but I need more play testing against different armies to see if it's a keeper-change or not..
The only downside is that after deployment, the army starts to play itself. As long as you're careful not to arrive piecemeal from random fleets and protect your big bugs from enemy assault units, it's very straightforward play style.
trouble with tank heavy lists?
lets think about this:
s4 + d6 + further d6 if you rolled a 6 on the first one.
that's going to tear armor apart in cc, the trouble will be getting there, and then if you cover hug or infiltrate the broodlord close to a tank to stir it up, you can get some damage going.
might be interesting to try a couple of groups of raveners with that, add EVEN MORE power to the punch. although that would make the list have fewer models.
I think an all stealer would have trouble with skimmers and fast vehicles, rather then heavy ones that do not move too much. For example, they would struggle against Eldar vehicles, i.e vypers and jet bikes, SM LS and their varients, as well as dark eldar. Probably necron destroyers would cause some harm and some others that i can't remember. SO, if you play opponents with fast vehicle armies, then pure stealers probbaly wouldnt be best. If yoyu combined them with shooty TMC then it would do better.
no nt really they wouldnt be a problem unless they were skimmer heavy as most armies at max field 2-3 skimmers. unless elder playing siam-han or some other special varient lsit your not going to find many skimmer-heavy armies apart from elder and dark elder, and believe me they have to come out and fight you some tiem because no skimmers like NONE have ordanance weapons and very few have blast meaning that unless there very lucky they'll only be killing 1 or less models per skimmer, and as soon as they dropped of their troops which they would have to do you could easily nail them, in fact 'nid cc does better againset skimmers then 'nid shooting!
I would be very supprised if nid cc did better against skimmers then nid shooting. For one, skimmers can move 24" to get away from the cc units, meaning, if used correctly, they can be out of combat for the majority of the game.
Also, as for 1 kill per skimmer, that's very doubtful. Take LST for example. 4 assualt cannon shots and 3 heavy bolter shots at ap4. No nid troops will get saves and so would be expecting around 3 kills from each LST and with three in each squad that's a good stealer squad dead per shooting phase from one unit. Very nasty indeed.
a yes but tell me what player takes 3 LST in an army, in fatc ive only ever seen at max 1 in any army ive played againset or seen in a battle. And more often then not none at all.
