Welcome to Librarium Online!
I have things on my Tyranids that aren't used as such, things that I think make the nids look better. Example....all my Warriors are shooty...but I really don't like just say a deathspitter as their only arm...I just don't care for how it looks, I would rather them have upper actual "arms" as well. So I have some scything talons and rending claws on Warriors that I actually don't point out...for just looks. Just the same, I have pure shooty Carnifexs and both of them have a pair of scything talons that I don't actually pay for because I don't use them as talons..they are just for looks.
Here is my problem, I ecnountered a guy who had a big problem with my models. Claiming it was decieving and I was doing it on purpose. Saying that I didn't tell him right off the bat and he would of played differently. I was a bit surprised...as I have played many MANY games with this army and not one person has complained, simply because the little things that are modeled and aren't actually used aren't a big enough deciding factor. But just the same, I didn't tell him right off the bat, but it wasn't being intentional or trying to be sneaky...I just didn't think about it.
So my question is, how would you guys handle this? does he have some validity to his complaints? or is he just being a poor sport?
So you're basically trying to model them with only one weapon? Unfortunately, that's not allowed. Those Tyranids must have two weapons.
Why do the survivors remain anonymous -- as if cursed -- while the dead are revered? Why do we cling to what we lose while we ignore what we still hold?
Name none of the fallen, for they stood in our place, and stand there still in each moment of our lives.

he does have some validity, but nothing to get worked up about. remember this is a game, games are for fun. did you beat him? sounds like he may be covering up for his own failure, just like i always blame the lag for my losses in halo 2. but unfortunatly he is right and this is illegal, though not as illegal as the "this can of old spice deodarant, yah... it is an inducted landraider crusader" syndrome. i am runnin in circles now but you dig my means no?
DEpends on how you modelled it, if you nid has 2 guns on it's armylist and you model it with 2 guns and some ST it's okay, I've done this with my two 3rd edition fex's, I do tell people beforehand.
If however you have them equipped with 2 guns but only model them with 1 gun and ST then you breaking rules.
If you don't mind, i'd like to ask a question about ewuiping warriors. Because GW is a bit stingy and only give one pair of rending claws with the warriors box set, I've stuck the ST from the genestealers on there instead. In the list I of course pay for the rending claws, and usually tell my opponent what they are armed with, or they generally ask. So, would the ST from the stealers pass as rending claws? They strictly aren't claws, but as they are shorter and stumpier the ST that come with the warriors. Anyway they're stuck on and that's that, I just wanna make sure i'm not dramatically in breach of any WYSIWYG rules.
Sorry...i should of elaborated more. All my guns are twin-linked...except my fexs which have barbed strangler and venom cannon. So they do have two weapons. I don't care for the silly lookin "feeder tubes" that come with guns for nids. As far as I know, not using feeder tubes is not illegal. So yes...my shooty stuff has two weapons. By the rules...my stuff is legal, I've made sure and all my twin-linked guns are modelled as twin-linked.

Here's the scoop:
As far as GW is concerned you must follow the WYSIWYG rules for all weapons and major wargear. So, as long as they are modelled with both weapon options and no extra ones you're fine. In your examples you have added scything talons and rending claws to models just for looks. According to the WYSIWYG rules these models are illegal. The models must represent what you paid for. I doubt they would let you use them in a tournament.
If this is a friendly game then I don't see what the big deal is. My friends and I proxy models all the time. I have actually played a few games using paper circles to represent my fictional Tyranid army. "Try before you buy" is my motto when it comes to 40k. But we have run into problems when your opponent forgets the rending claws on those models are actually normal claws and moves accordingly. It can give you an unfair advantage.
My opinion is to modify the arms you are not paying for so they don't look exactly like the biomorphs. You can remove the scythes from the scything talons and change them to spikes of something else. You can modify the rending claws to look like something else also. It doesn't break any rules to have non-wargear items as extra components to your models. As long as they don't resemble real biomorphs too closely you shouldn't have a problem.
Then, if this guy complains again tell him to stop whining.
I do not criticize. I do not offend. All I offer is my opinion which means only as much as you make it.
If you didn't tell him ahead of time, he's got some validity to his whine. But again, it's still a whine.
WYSIWYG means that what's the model equipped with must be shown on it, not the other way around, the extar ST and RC don't matter.
Yeah, I was under the impression that that rule only applied to things you have pointed out and added, not things on the model that isn't paid for. In that case...just because you choose the new regen. head for the new fex now means you must always take regen. because you chose that head, or you liked how the enhanced senses head looked so this would mean you ALWAYS have to take enhanced senses? I personally think the whole complaint is a bunch of BS. Why can't a Tyranid player convert things to make it unique or how I want it? Seeing as how EVERY damned SM player I have ever ran accrossed has freakin 20 conversions to his squad leaders/champions/ etc. bla bla bla, and not once are they repremanded for having their models look different than what's in the codex, but yet when my 1 squad of basic warriors has scything talons on him that isn't being used AND has every other single upgrade shown on the model and is totally legal as per the dex....it's illegal?
It's a double standard if I am in the wrong in this, and really just showcases the large amounts of love GW has for SM.
