stealths are very nice units. lots of fire power. you can get more st. 5 shots than with a squad of FW's. however, one of the best things about firewarriors is their weapons 30" range. I cannot begin to describe how advantagous that is. if you went with stealths, your range would be nearly halved. That could be disatrous since the focus of a tau army(for the most part) is to destroy the enemy before they get close to your troops. firewarriors can usually get at least 3 rounds of shooting in before they get assualted. thats if the enemy isnt special uniyts with leaping or jump packs. the range of the pulse rifle is what makes firewarriors a feared enemy.

The rise in the terror alert level was precipitated by a recent fire which destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively disabling their military.
I'm one of those Tau players that uses 6 fire warriors and 18 stealths. Stealths certainly require an agressive style because of their short range, but they survive, while fire warriors don't. If you're playing missions, you should use stealths instead of fire warriors anyday.
The short answer to how to use stealths properly is to keep them alive. Expanding on that, firing them at something is less important than scoring an objective. Going down the same road, target units that can kill your stealths first. Most players target anti-tank first so their tanks survive (unless playing all infantry, but then anti-infantry is targetted first so it's the same deal). Forget that when playing with 18 stealths. Keep stealths alive first, hammerheads and bodyguards will soak up the antitank pretty well for you (if you're inclined to use bodyguards, but now I'm talking about an army with 6 fire warriors).
Stealths are 30 points a model they have 1 wound and a 3+ save, lose one Stealth and you lose 3 shots, they have to be close to be effective which means they get shot.Originally Posted by onlainari
If your not using them to kill the enemy units it means they have more units left to contest those objectives you always go on about. To win this game you have to do damage if your taking 3 units of Stealths (540 points) and then not using them to do the job for which they were designed (harrasing units and flanking etc) and you spend the game trying to keep them alive to take 3 objectives etc and try to earn VP's then your leaving the opponent with a lot of undamaged units as well because 540pts of your list is a massive chunk of points not to be doing damage with.
If you have a 1/4 or a 1/3 of your points tied up in Stealths then the opponent is going to hit them basically because he wont have much left to hit.
Also why the hell would anyone waste anti tank on XV8 bodyguards I think you will find most anti tank is directed at tanks.
You seem to have one tactical philosphy Oni and thats keep stuff alive, i/e FW in DF running around avoiding fire all game and trying for an objective, keeping Stealths hidden, Using Kroot to push units away, XV8's with MP to stand back and shoot, do you actually try to kill anything in your games.
Fire Warrior teams at full strengthh can soak up a lot of fire (4+ saves and deployed in cover if poss) they have better range (30") can move 6" a turn and rapid fire if the enemy is in range, they can usually keep a unit in CC for a few turns and when they die you lose one shot not 3.
Stealths have a place, its an elites place not a troops they have no place replacing FW, they support them. Tau perform well with lots of distraction units and by splitting fire having 3 units of Stealths at 500+pts does not allow this to happen.
Fire Warrior teams of 6 are a bad idea even used as you do in DF if they take two losses your testing and the reduced firepower makes them useless at FOF or when trying to take objectives etc.
Thanks for telling me the stats of stealths, I'd forgotten them.
Anyway, you don't have to listen to my tactical advice, but I'm not going to stop giving it. Stealths still usually get to shoot and not die anyway, I'm just saying that there's usually one or two turns where you're better off not shooting, because they'd die otherwise.
Yes, I agree. I have taken to directly trying to replace FW with Stealths, and it works great. Same shots per point, though yes, less wounds. The two amin strengths they have over FW? A) They almost always are within range of a target, Fw warriors often are not (well, they lack LOS) Stealths are just really hard to kill. Between JSJ and the camo, they are hard to get LOS on, hard to shoot, hard to assault. All that, and they grab objectives, too.
mmmm i see.Because when i play games my poor fire warrior often die. They get massacred by heavy bolter and things like that.Even though they have 4+ armour i find them fragile so i though about taking few of them and replacing them by stealth
The durability of stealths doesn't really come from the 3+ save, though of course that helps, it comes from JSJ and the stealth effect.
I was thinking about this not too long ago. I was thinking, if I take 18 stealth suits, 1 or 2 FW squads in D-fish, and load up on kroot and IA3 Gang Worker squads, I can have a pretty effective army list... I would like to know how this would work out...
Tau - Knights of the Frozen Wastes
Necrons - The Phalanx of Gleaming Death
CSM - Iron Warriors
