i just played a battle with my army list who has only 6 fire warriors(it is in the army list section)and i destroyed my brothers black templars army. While with my old list who had 33 fire warriors i almost always lost.So are fire warriors actually good?they cost 10 points, have a nice weapon i agree but it doesnt pack the punch required agaisnt these space marines army(anything with a 3+ save). They have a decent armor but their stats suck.I hear people say that fire warriors are one of the best base unit but i think that it is not true.compared to a sister of battle which cost the exact same points you have +1 save,a weapon that is a bit weaker and has a lower range but agaisnt anything with a 3+ save you wont notice a huge difference, better stats and they have the capability to get special weapons.I often lose a lot of fire warriors under enemy fire, heavy bolter and plasma cannon are just devastating. And then they often flee or get destroyed in CC.So i made my list with only 6 fire warriors but with 12 stealth to give me a reasonable amount of S5 shots and much more mobility. So do you people think fire warriors are good?
Honestly, I don't see how having a lot of Stealth Suit shots would be any more effective against MEQs than having a lot of Fire Warrior shots.. same stats, except Fire Warriors have longer range.
IMO, Fire Warriors are worth it, yes. However, they are not the end-all-be-all unit of the Tau army; nothing is. They are very useful in some cases, and not so useful in others, but against MEQ's and the likes, massed firepower will always take them down. Whether it's by a Stealth Squad or a FW Squad, it's the same.
For the points, I think Fire Warriors are a bargain; highest strength basic gun in the game, longest range basic gun in the game, reasonable armour save, average stats except when it comes to Initiative/WS, and reasonably cheap. I'd take a Fire Warrior over a Storm Trooper any day.
The only "crappy stats" that they have are only useful when in close combat; imagine that, if you will - a shooting unit having crappy close combat stats? No way..
Some will argue that Fire Warriors are "the best." Others will argue that they "suck" and you should take Stealth Suits. My personal opinion is neither; they have their uses, like most every other unit in the game, and they shine when you use them correctly.
Fire warriors only excell at killing orks and tyranids. now I play Tau and i have 24 fir warriors ive never lost a game against orks. the purpose of tau is to put as much punch as possible before the enemy closes in. with a pulse rifle being the best standard issue weapon in the game and coming to the fire warrior for free is pretty good.
Second if you as a Tau ever let an enemy get in to CC Shame on you for playing a crappy game (no offense) I played at a RTT for the first time against someone other than orks (Space Wolves) and I tell you ive heard of date rapes that have gone better than what i did that game. I sucked and accepted it. besides for armies like black templars and necrons use broadsides and hammer heads. the Rail Gun is the best weapon in the game (in comparison of Str AP and range) so with a full squad of 3 broadsides thats 3 twin linked Str 10 shots into the enemies tanks and leaders.
The whole Tau army Works as a team. no single unit outshining the others in a game. Everything covering the other to protect each part.
Some enemy units getting to close to your FW, and the FWs alone can't stop them? Pull back that Rail/Ionhead to help out, the Hammerhead won't win you the game if its the oinly unit on the board.
I play against Eldar alot, and yeah, they roick against Guardians, but when the Scorpions close in, I pullback as much of the army as I can to wipe them out, or just weaken them to a point where even assaulting/being assaulted by FW could be deadly.
IMO the Tau play very uniquely compared to other armies, and I embrace that.
yes they are good agaisnt eldar guardiands but agaisnt any armies who have 3+ save they lose so much of their effectiveness. And fire warriors almost always form a firing line, but if you army only has 6 of them and lots of stleath and crisis the enemy wont have a place to attack,it will have to either send everything chasing part of your army while they run away while shooting at them or to spread his troops out which makes it much easier for you to win.so unlike many other armies basic troops fire warriors are not nessecary.
yes but what i am saying is that fire warriors are not neesecary
He has a point, I usually like to have a troop heavy army. In my games against space marines though, this hasnt really worked out. Actually, anything with a 3+ save...
Taking a bare minimum of troops(6fw, 5(or 10?) kroot) with 15 crisis suits, 3 ionheads, and maybe some railrifle pathfinders in fast attack, is really the only way you will be able to do good gainst marines. Going all troops will just get you slaughtered.
Tau - Knights of the Frozen Wastes
Necrons - The Phalanx of Gleaming Death
CSM - Iron Warriors

actually that much crisis and ion heads is not required either,i got 12 stealth and 6 anti marine crisis and 3 hammerhead who drop sweet pie plates and i do just fine
I disagree, and many will disagree with you even more.Originally Posted by chaos0xomega
You can easily make a competitive list using a fair amount of Fire Warriors, and you don't need to stack with Ionheads and Crisis Suits.
I think, if you can't make a halfway decent list using Fire Warriors (against MEQs), then there's just something wrong with the way you play and you aren't using them to their maximum efficiency.
