Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hello Folks, I'm new here so please forgive if this topic has been posted before.
I'm a vanilla Eldar player and I play against two very infantry heavy IG armies. Unfortunately I have to report that I have had very little success against them. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might be able to lay the smack down on their imperial butts?
(edit for spelling)

I'm not gonna offer any tactics but just unit selections.
Dire Avengers - They put out alot of shots which means alot of dead guard.
Striking Scorpions - Alot of Attacks means more dead guard.
Storm Guardians, make a squad of 5 + a warlock with destructor in a falcon. 3 flamer templates can't go wrong.
Lots of vypers with 2 shuriken cannons each.
Farseer + bodyguard, the bodyguard should all have destructor except for 1 with enhance and then you barbecue enemies.
Wraithlords, these will die quickly because of the ammount of heavy weapons the guard have but the brightlance and powerfists will pop tanks and the 2 flamers will kill guard.
Tenozuma - The Burninator... I came, I saw, I posted.Originally Posted by Aussie Bogan

Everything Tenozuma said is good, but here's a couple more
Warp spiders are mobile, tough and can put out a lot of ST6 shots into guard, then run back to cover.
Reapers may be expensive but they have great range, and a reaper exarch with fast shot and an EML can take out around 12 guard by himself, or go tank hunting.
Vibro cannons as well are very useful as you can probably line them up to hit several units at once, each one forcing up to 6 saves and a pinning check. The automatic glancing hit on vehicles is also good to remember as that can take even a leman russ out of the fight right there with a lucky roll.
Guardian defenders with an EML platform would be good as well, but take a warlock with conceal if you're going that route.
A deep striking squad of 5 hawks including an exarch with sustained assault and a web of skulls would also work well. A potential 12 shots plus the overachieving exarch and an ap5 template would be merely okay againt Marines, but against IG it will likely mean a heck of a lot of dead guardsmen.
Most important of all, take Fortune. Any time you are facing massed guns, you really want to be able to reroll failed saves.
Vypers with double Shuriken Cannons
Warp spiders (already said, but really, they own IG)
Stay away from Dark Reapers, they'll die very easily against a shooty army and they can't possibly kill enough Guardsmen to make back their points!
If you infiltrate scorpions, be very very cautious of ordnance weapons or the squad dies a horrible death.
Warhammer Fantasy: Warriors of Chaos, High Elves
Warhammer 40k: Eldar, Space Marines, Orks
scorpions on the charge are BEASTS!!! w/ the mandiblasters thats 40 str 4 WS 4 shots...
swooping hawks in number are great bc shots/21pt extra wounsd that cant be instakilled away fo yo 733t tooled power wepd exarch... good luck converting that though (really tough, or maybe i just stink at conversions)
watch out for banshees, prolly wouldnt recommend reapers, dragons (not enough shots, will attract LOTS of ordinance) shining spears are meh... jetbikes might be good... close combat is VERY GOOD!!!! run the heck away from scatter laser... worse ap then starcannon and mathematically averages only .5 more rounds per shooting phase... shuriken cannons only to shave pts for more... ie shurikannon instead of starcannon so you can take more plats for your defenders...
Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately I already use most of the units suggested. The problem is that I just can't seem to get rid of enough of the damned guard. By the time I get close to him I've been shot to heck by his heavy weapons, not to mention I have to take at least one round of concentrated flashlight fire before I get in CC.
Perhaps this will help, one of my opponents uses 2 hellhounds and the rest is pretty much infantry. The other guy uses a leman russ but has a 50 strong squad of conscripts that just can't be eaten through fast enough, and can't be ignored due to it's sheer size.
Any hints on tactics?
Have you tried a Shadow Weaver Battery? Large lightly armored troop formations like that seem ripe for three S6 ordinance templates a turn.
Well, the easiest mistake to make is to spread your fire. Try and set it up so that all of your guns have line of sight to as many of his squads as possible. Then pick one of his squads and systematically flatten it. you can't win via attrition, so just pour all that nasty firepower into a full platoon and either make it break or take it down to a man.Don't be afraid to do a little overkill on them to remove a squad, and really with the options eldar have, you should be able to cut at least an entire platoon down with one turn of shooting. Hard to say more without knowing the tactics on both sides better
Yeah I've got a battery of 2 shadow weavers, they are ok but with escalation they lose atleast 2 turns of shooting. And combine that with the fact that they scatter, I've found that they just aren't worth it against so many infantry. I have been thinking about getting some vibrocannon though.
As for splitting my fire, what you say is true, unfortunately they have so many damned squads that I can't really isolate just one. I'm always outgunned. It doesn't matter if I kill a full squad, or even two, in the next turn since I've exposed most of my army to shoot with then they just open up with the rest of their army and blow me away.
Even if I'm in cover the hellhounds ignore cover and even if they miss they hit. It's very frustrating.
infiltrate and or deepstrike EVERYTHING??? IG's standard armor save is 5+ or 6 (?), so use your lasblasters on your hawks, with the exarch's web, to just mow down infantry as u move to get the exarch into CC... there he should pretty much take on a squad by himself... not to mention their ordy-blast that ignores pretty much all IG armour saves and wounds them on a 3+, and there are so many you are bound to kill something!
as for the tanks, try this (i use this against anything with treads, but maybe bc im half insane):
7 striking scorpions
haywire + plasma 'nades
exarch w/stealth, crushing blow, scorpion's claw
this is a 170 pt unit, infiltrate, and run up to the tank... exarch should powerfist, everything else should haywire... try and consolidate into cover, if at all possible... if you take out the leman russ you should get your points back (?), so just use the remnants to either a) make a run for another tank, b) harass his infantry (cant be targeted in cc by his battle cannon, right?)
avoid banshees, drags, spiders, reapers. Fire dragons are tempting, but haywires are much better, and the scorps also can slaughter hordes... spiders arent wonderful in cc, and dont have ap (so still a handful of saves) banshees (grimace) reapers are great against marines, but dont spew out enough to be worth it. AP 5 is overkill get another falcon... maybe if you want fast shot a krak missile to take something out right quick. You should use your Vyper's maneuovrability to get a side/rear shot with a starcannon, scatterlaser, bright lance, EML, anything w/STR 6 or higher...
LEMAN RUSS IS YOUR FIRST TARGET! the battle cannon is indirect, ignores cover, APs everything... use vypers/infiltrators to take out this beast. DO NOT USE A FALCON! however tempting it could get killed by insane amounts of fire directed at it, whereas the vyper is a cheap 65 point thing that exists for stuff like this...
also, spread out as much as possible, unless you can block LOS to almost everything after taking out the BC Leman Russ. then concentrate inwards, and get everything into good positions.
THE IMPERIAL GUARD ARE A MASSIVE BUT GRINDING FORCE!
you won't outnumber them, but you can outmanevuere them... dont fear CC reprisals, they are almost as bad at it as mech tau!
