The very first thing you should get is the newest print of the codex (there are several ones, because the changed a few things).
After this, warriors and raiders are the staple of most DE armies. But there are already several post about this topicon this page, just look around a bit, you will get a lot of usefull tips there.

a nice relatively good place to start it all out is to have a couple warrior squads of ten, two of them armed with either dark lances or splinter cannons (depending on who you are facing), and then a raider mounted HQ with a heavily upgraded dracon, a few good incubi (at least 4 or so), 1 guy w/ splinter cannon and one with blaster, and then just a few more filler warriors. That should be about 5 points, and it should be good and plenty to get you through any small battle. I've beat all sorts of different types of armies with that small strike force.

after that consider getting into wyches and reavers, and then some more raider squads, but that should be enough to get you started

Ok from your other posts I'm guessing you dont like the Dark Eldar much, well I do 5+ save means nothing to me as I play guard I know how to hug cover and use it to my advantage, however my main reason to start Dark Eldar are the 3 half painted Dark Eldar on my table and the one i found in a box in the closet that's painted like a Harlequinn from before I knew Harlequinns existed

You can't be serious...

Wyches are the best assault troops in the entire game. Once they made it into close combat (not too hard with a raider) they in average beat genestealers, khorne berserkers, plaguemarines, banshees and many other otherwise excellent assault troops (at equal points).

Crappy heavy support? Have you seen what a ravager with three disintegrators can do to marines or especially terminators? With a little luck a single volley can wipe out an entire UNIT!

Here's a rule of thumb I use.

10-man Warrior squads with 2 Dark Lances. Have AT LEAST 2 squads.
Ravagers with 3 Dissies. Have AT LEAST 1.

The rest is up to you. Options are:
1. More 10-man 2 Dark Lance squads.
2. More Ravagers
3. Raiders. Fill with 10-men with S.Cannon + Blaster. Give the Raider a Dissie.
4. Equip Warrior squads with 2 Blasters OR Sybarite w/Agoniser.
5. 5-man Mandrake/Reaver squads for objectives.

If you want you can use my SAFH.

HQ
Archon, S.Field, Agoniser+SP

Troops
6x10 Warriors, 2 Dark Lances, 2 Shredders

Fast Attack
3x3 Reavers, 2 Blasters

Heavy Support
3 Ravagers w/3 Disintegrators

Unsurprisingly 9 Dissies, 12 Dark Lances, 6 Blasters, 12 Shredders does quite well. It only gets MUCH better with TVR. The Warriors are cheap to collect and give you nearly a 50% Troops ratio too .

I say rock on, the 40k universe needs more DE to rip the souls from all those marine armies.

The advice above is very good - 3 3-disintegrator Ravagers will put some serious hurt on an opponent, and sniper squads (10-man w/2 dark lances) are great for eliminating your opponent's tanks and transports.

DE have 3 great CC units: Incubi (only available as a Retinue to a Lord), Wyches and Grotesques. Incubi - 2 power weapon attacks each (1 base and 1 for the tormentor helm). Wyches with wych weapons. Great for tying up troublesome units. Grotesques - slow (can't FoF), but if mounted on a Raider with a Haemonculus, they are tough. 2A, 2W, and can't be harmed by weapons less than S6. You could actually say 4 by adding in Warp Beasts, but these are trickier to use because they can't ride on a Raider, so they're vulnerable to shooting damage (6+ save).

Unfortunately, DE has a number of poor or useless unit selections:
- Mandrakes - cost as much as wyches w/o the benefits. They have some special powers that are nice, but I don't want to buy a unit to slink off into a corner so it can hold a quarter.
- Reaver Jetbikes - too expensive for what they do. I know, 25 points is cheaper than a marine bike, I get more value from a Warrior sniper squad than from 3 of these guys with 2 blasters.
- Hellions
- Scourges - heavy support that doesn't pull its weight. Why give wings and a 12" more to someone with a heavy weapon? 4 Splinter cannons you say? That's fine if you park them behind a Warrior squad for screening, but then why are you paying for the wings?

One unit not mentioned in the previous notes is the Talos. While it is slow (only moves 6" and can't FoF), its great for soaking up firepower that would otherwise be directed at the Raiders/Ravagers. I use 2 Taloi and 1 Ravager (partially because those are the models I've got, but it works for me). I like to have one move towards the objective and keep one back for counterassault.
