I have one fast attack spot left, and am debating with myself and others online as to the upside of scarabs vs. wraithes. Which do you find more useful at what purpose? For context, I'll probably take a full squad of one for a unit to slow down enemy close combat units as they attack the phalanx. My current list also has two tomb spiders, whose scarab making might change what you say.
Thank you.

It depends on who I'm fighting. If i'm taking on Orks for instance I'd probably be using Scarabs, largely because while Wraiths are handy in close combat, they aren't going to make a huge dent in a horde army, whereas Scarabs will slow down a big mob of boyz for a good couple of turns. However, against a smaller, elite force (Marines. Eldar, etc) wraiths are excellent at mugging small units that get isolated.

You can check out my list in the army list section.

For fast attack, two squads of destroyers, and the current list has scarabs, simply because they come in the box set and the math works out better that way (why 41 pts? whats wrong with 40?), but those are no reasons not to fiddle with the army to make it the best it can be.

Gonna be a shooty list, phalanx up and screen the destroyers and heavy destroyers with warriors, and I'm looking for a unit that is good for tying up an enemy squads that get close to the phalanx. More an enphasis on staying power than on slaughtering a unit.

I'd like to think that if I shoot up most of an army but one unit of bezerkers, wulfen, a seer council, or the like seem about to ruin my day, what would be better to counter assault with?

Well if you want to tie up a unit then both wraiths and scarabs will do that. Lots of scarabs will take a few turns to get through.
where as the wraiths have the 3+I save and will take a few turns to get through. also if you are shooty, when you get done
shooting other units you could teleport your wraiths out of h2h and then rapid fire on a squad.

I would choose wraiths. I usually take 3 of them with a destroyer lord with phase shifter res orb and w.scythe.

I would go with the Scarabs, as they have about 30 times the staying power of the wraiths. I know they're small and weak and stuff, but the wraiths just don't seem to pack enough punch without a lord there to back em up. and since yer goin shooty, all you need is to tie up those fast moving units, the longer the better. Nothing is more satisfying than watching your opponents face as after he FINALLY gets done wading through scarabs, his unit falls to the gauss fire you've had time to amass.

And if I don't have the points for that decked out a lord? Will wraiths still have the potency?

Since you are doing shooty then I would go with scarabs.
They can tie up an annoying squad for a while while your other troops concentrate their fire on other troops.

Also if your are lucky(like me this weekend :w ) you might be able to kill some termies with your scarabs I charged a squad of 5 termies and a chappy in termie armor and with a 40 attacks they have to miss some saves and combat they only inflicted 7 wounds on my scarabs will I killed 4!! The next turn I actually kill the chappy and the other termie so that just goes to show you to not underestimate scarabs <

Wow, crazy! While I'm not counting on what I pick to act as terminator killers, the fact that taking 7 wounds in return does not even kill three models is what stands out to me. While I'm not counting on that lucky rolling, scarabs do seem the better option. Anyone care to disagree?

Feel free to go to the army list section and comment on the list, all help is appreciated
