While looking over my new Falcon i just got something dawned on me. Would an army with three sqauds of vypers each with a max amount of units in the sqaud work? I mean in place of a falcon. It seems that enough of them with the right weapons would take down just about anything. Like have one squad with all bright lances going after tanks then the other with straight starcannons?
Then, because the cost of this would be great...i think. (Haven't done math yet) You could still get a good amount of supporting firepower from gaurdians with platforms and maybe even a falcon or wraith.
Any thoughts on how to make an army like this work?
3 vypers with starcannons = 195 pts
1 falcon with starcannon + holo-field and stones = 190 pts
It's a hard comparison because they do very different things, a falcon is our land raider type tank, it's there to take a beating and shoot the crap out of things (i personally like starcannon pulse laser shuricannon as it completely decimates hordes and units of powerful infantry like terminators and such. Vypers on the otherhand provide a mobile firing platform (think guardian antigrav squad on a jetbike) and are useful for surgical strikes against certain types of infantry but not against hordes. Also if a vyper takes a armament destroyed result, they have basically lost their effectiveness whereas a falcon can lose up to 2 guns and still be somewhat effective (i've never lost an armament on a falcon) The answer is that vypers are cheap but no where near as resiliant as a falcon and a falcon can be used to draw your opponents shots away from your vypers because a falcon is a much more imposing target. Basically this exemplifies the key to playing eldar well; being able to confuse your opponent into not choosing the right targets at the right time to go after. I just played a game today against my friend who was playing tyranids, he unloaded his carnifex and 3 warriors at my falcon and accomplished nothing, next turn my dark reapers and a vyper ripped his warriors apart and my falcon obliterated his carnifex. now if he had chosen to shoot my reapers, I doubt I would have had ample firepower to wipe out his warriors outright.

I like Vyper's and I think they can be effective. I usually kit mine out with Starcannon and CTM. With CTM it can pop out shoot, and pop back avoiding any return fire which is pretty handy considering its weak armour.
The Falcon on the other hand is more of the Eldar's main tank. It's pretty hard to destroy when kitted out with Holo Field and Spirit Stones and can dish out quite a bit of firepower. The Falcon can also transport units which comes in handy.
In larger games, then I suggest both.
Just some things:
- Don't give Vyper's one shot weapons because of their low BS. If you do so, then your wasting a lot of pts because it will only hit half the time. I suggest Starcannon's on Vypers.
- Try not to let your Vyper's get shot at too much. They won't take much hits before they go down so I suggest CTM to help avoid being shot.
- On Falcons, I reccomend Starcannon's. Upgrade wise, CTM is not a good idea becaues lots of the times its hard to hide the whole Falcon so I usually go with Holo FIeld and Spirit Stones. When moving over 6in. it can be really hard for your opponent to destroy.
As others have said, they are meant for diffrent things.
I love my Falcon and prefers it above the Vypers. Altough if you would go up agianst MEQs, then a squad of 3 Vypers with SC can do some serious damage to his troops and as long as you stay out of bolter fire you will be fine, especialy if they have a big target like the Falcon to use their heavy weapons at.
I think you should stick to your Falcon, it is a lot more reliable than those Vypers. Vypers are good points filler though, they excell at last turn objective claiming but so does the Falcon. A lot of players out there hate facing a Falcon over any other vehicle in the game!
Warhammer Fantasy: Warriors of Chaos, High Elves
Warhammer 40k: Eldar, Space Marines, Orks
sigh, I think you should look at Saim Hann craftworld, try 18 vypers!
Everything you have been told is a lie!
With starcannons, 1 regular upgraded falcon and farseer on bike with guide :yes:Originally Posted by Cheredanine
can't you just stick a farseer with guide in falcon and guide it from within?
The Morbidos Fleet will reclaim the Eldar empire. This time there shall be no mercy. Let them choke in their own blood!
Yeah, if you want to.
Frankly I would rather take a wild rider chief as a HQ, seems fluffier and in either case the HQ needs to give you a littl CC edgeOriginally Posted by shadygodofdeath
