Welcome to Librarium Online!
i want to make a really fast moving combat army and i really like the idea of a cavalry type unit. i pay 207 points for a scorpion squad, so that's really my limit when it comes to what i'm willing to pay for the jetbikes.
first up, the shining spears. i can get 4 for 200 points (the exrach is a waste unless you're using a brightlance special imo). on the charge they get 12 S5 attacks. however, if i'm not careful, when they themselves are charged they only get 4.
that's enough to put a dent in a lot of units. and as they will usually be backing up another squad, there isn't much chance of comeback. they are a survivable unit, with standard marine toughness and a 3+ save, which can be made 3++. it's an expensive unit which will probably never make back its points, but i can definately see the uses.
the other option is a farseer with 2 warlocks, all on jetbikes with witchblades and pistols (i think they can get pistols). the warlocks take no powers and the farseer takes fortune. i've now got a unit re-rolling a 3+/4++ save who get slightly less attacks, but wound ANYTHING on a 2+. hello carnifex, goodbye carnifex. maybe. this is around 210 points but also has great vehicle killing potential, especially if i pay an extra 6 points and take singing spears.
i'm leaning towards the shining spears because the models are cool, there's less converting involved and they can still do that carnifex with some luck. but the do restrict my FOC a tad. i like using vypers as big shiny targets to distract from wave serpants and things. and it's not hard to make 65 points back. this is where the farseer squad comes into its own. i have to take one HQ. it's usually a farseer and he's usually 76 points to guide/fortune one squad and i don't consider it that efficient.
i hear spears bashed a lot and the farseers and warlocks lauded in this configuration. anyone want to push me either way?
If you want a CC unit, I probally wouldn't go for Shining Spears. Seer Councils usually work pretty well in CC; however, they tend to be pretty expensive but if you have the pts they can be effective.
I wouldn't take Shining Spears. They are too expensive for their capability, and you can get other things for the same pt cost and have them work much better.
I'd go with the Farseer and Warlocks. They can be a solid, fast unit, but make sure you give it support. Maybe use a configuration similar or like the following:
+Bolt Pistol (1)
+Bolt Pistols (2)
If you wanted, you could slim it down by replacing the Warlocks witchblades with CCW's.
that would be the case if i was using them as a striking unit. they are a backup unit only. normally i wouldn't touch them with a bargepole but it has intrigued me recently.
i take your point about the mini council though. if i was to take it, witchblades would be mandatory, or they lose the shock factor.
