well, first you should get a synapse creature with those gaunts, that'll probably be an HQ, if your friend wants to play 40k in 40min he best buys warriors, otherwise a Hive Tyrant is a solid HQ. You'll probably need those warriors anyway.

    so, my guess:

    HQ
    Warriors, and next a Tyrant

    Troops
    some more gaunts and hormagaunts
    maybe some genestealers.

    that's a good start for a core,

    than maybe a fex

and depending on the style he wants to play, more Heavies or Fast attacks

I would go with warriors as they can fulfill a variety of roles as each one can be armed differently reasonably cheaply depending how many bios he wants. make sure he knows if he wants a shooty, swarm or cc army tec. before glueing on the weapons as well armed warriors can make a big difference.

If this dosn't appeal to him then he must get some form of synapse creature to hold the gaunts together.

Get the Battle force set, since he has a gaunt box already, this would give him a total of 32 gaunts, 3 warriors, 8 genestealers and 1 carnifex, somewhere in the neighbourhood of 500-600pts and a very balanced list.

The battleforce with a few biomorphs makes for a nice 600 point army. You can trim it down to 500, or even 400 if you'd like. That's what i'm fielding now.

Plans after that are less clear. Probably another genestealer brood, another fex and a hive tyrant in no particular order, then i'm going to be looking into getting a few of the less common troups (biovore, lictors, gargoyles etc.)

For a small army, I'd suggest starting by getting some Warriors to act as a HQ, and some Genestealers for added punch. If he decides to expand the army, he can always sub the Warriors into Elites, and use a Tyrant with some Guards.
I do apologise. My previous signature was positively turd. Let's hope this'll be better.

    Aw, crap. I failed.
